Education - School of Theatre

The Matrix School of Theatre engages young artists, ages 5-18, in playwriting, performance, and visual arts programs housed at our theatre or at other partner locations. Through Matrix's unique learner-centered approach, young people in Detroit have the opportunity to create new work that calls attention to crucial issues in their lives, writing original plays that entertain as well as educate. Through Matrix's sequential curriculum, participants improve their literacy and language skills and also acquire confidence in their own ideas and their ability to affect positive change. Out multi-arts programs take place on-site at the Matrix Theatre, as well as in Detroit schools, engaging nearly 2,000 youth throughout the year.

Population(s) Served

The award-winning professional theatre arm of Matrix Theatre Company, offering productions with which our diverse audiences can relate and engage. The productions are staffed with professional local artists, and address issues that resonate with our community. We have produced a variety of plays since 1991, including original plays written by community members, plays written by local and nationally-renowned playwrights, and work we've commissioned. Over 3,000 people each year see our productions, which have tackled issues like gender equality, displacement, access to education, intimate partner violence, elder care, immigration, race relations, and much more.
