What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
The Coalition works with the Troy School District to provide prevention programming across all grade levels. Working with parent groups we provide parenting information and education to help parents talk to their children about alcohol and drugs. We work with the faith community and legal system and are active in our drug treatment/therapy court.
Annual Celebrity Night Dinner
The single largesting fundraising event for the Coalition is the annual celebrity night dinner. The event consists of silent and live auctions, appetizers, dinner, and entertainment provided by a celebrity (comedian or musician). No alcohol is served at the event in order to model to our community members that it is possible to have a good time without consuming alcohol. The event is supported by major and table sponsorships in addition to individual ticket sales. It is held at a local banquet facility and attracts over 250 guests each year.
Incredible Kid Recognition
In the spring each year the Coalition ask for nominations from community members for "incredible kids" between the ages of 6-13. For the first year of the program in 2002 we recognized 19 youth - in 2009 it had grown to 114. Parents, teachers, families and friends are all invided to recognize the youth in their lives who have performed small acts of kindness or concern. The youth receive a gold medal from the Chief of Police, have their photo taken, their nomination form read, and recognition from local elected officials in addition to a star candy dish filled with treats. The event is video taped on the local community cable channel and publicized in the local newspapers.
Annual Prayer Breakfast
On the first Friday in May the Coalition holds an annual prayer breakfast for community members. All faith denominations are invited to participate and selected individuals give a prayer for a specific sector of the community. These include the businesses, community leaders, residents, youth, faith communities and peace. Each "pray-er" utilizes the language of their religion to give their prayer. Speakers have included a cantor, a native American, an imam, rabbi, priest, and chaplains. The Coalition hosts this event to (1) celebrate the rich diversity of religious denominations in Troy and (2) to recognize the importance faith plays in preventing substance abuse and other risky behaviors.
Rochester Villas Summer Camp
Approximately twelve years ago the Troy Police Department asked the Coalition to provide some summer programming for the youth who lived in one of the larger apartment complexes in town. They were seeing an increase in vandalism and youthful mischief among the residents and were being called upon by the management company to intervene frequently. The Coalition, in partnership with the Troy Police and Troy School District and City of Troy initiated a summer day camp for the children who lived at the "villas". Participants register in advance and are picked up at two different locations in the complex and transported by school district busses to the local middle school where the camp is held. Every Wednesday is set aside for field trips to various locations such as the Science Center, Zoo, parks or other fun venues for the youth. Every Thursday is set aside for activities provided by the Troy Police Department where they get to meet drug dogs, ride in a police car and experience other law enforcement activities. Students between the ages of 6-13 learn new skills, play games, bond with their camp counselors and local police officers and are kept busy in constructive ways during the summer months. The community supports the camp by providing scholarships so that anyone can attend regardless of income and businesses support the camp by paying for field trips. The Coalition hires additional summer staff to run the camp and pays for all other camp related expenses such as transportation and refreshment costs.
