Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Our Activities:
Health: Our health care activities are carried out by our partner organization, the Fundao Esperana, a Brazilian nonprofit organization that has been providing health and education to the inhabitants of the Amazon for over 30 years.
Child Survival - We support programs aimed at lowering infant mortality by teaching mothers how to better care for their children, emphasizing breast-feeding, nutrition, family planning, and hygiene.
Women's Health - Amazon-Africa Aid supports a program in the Amazon providing basic health, family planning, and gynecological services for women.
Fresh Water and Sanitation - A basic human right is access to fresh and clean water. Amazon-Africa Aid advocates well drilling programs in rural communities and schools along the Amazon.
AIDS Prevention - Amazon-Africa Aid has begun AIDS/STD education and prevention among highly at-risk populations including the Wai-Wai Indians, Mundurucu Indians, Quilombos, and other isolated groups along the Amazon Basin.
Health Education - Amazon-Africa Aid is involved in the production of posters, cassettes, brochures, pamphlets, videos, and other materials used in health education in developing regions.
Medical and Dental Clinic - Amazon-Africa Aid sends volunteer physicians, dentists, and surgery teams to work in a clinic that serves poor and indigent people along the Amazon. For more information on volunteering, contact our office.
Education:
Literacy Programs - In the Amazon, reading material is virtually non-existent. In an effort to stimulate reading and improve literacy, Amazon-Africa Aid, in conjunction with local schools, is developing the Amazon Children's Newsletter. The newsletter includes a series of articles, puzzles, and games designed to help children develop reading and critical thinking skills.
Higher Education - Amazon-Africa Aid is committed to supporting the Fundao Esperana Training Center which provides undergraduate and graduate courses in nursing, dental hygiene, management, development, law, education, and public health. Amazon-Africa Aid is specifically interested in providing access to higher education for low income students through GED courses and scholarship programs.
Environment:
Environmental Education - Understanding that to save the rainforest, we must help the children of the rainforest. Amazon-Africa Aid supports the development of educational materials and curriculum designed to help children of the Amazon understand how their actions effect their environment.
Youth at Risk:
Pastoral do Menor - Amazon-Africa Aid supports the Pastoral do Menor, a Brazilian nonprofit organization working with youth at risk. Amazon-Africa Aid is particularly interested in creating social capital for disenfranchised youth by helping the Pastoral create a series of after school programs focusing on building self esteem, providing role models, facilitating positive peer interaction, and building community networks for youth.
Africa - Amazon-Africa Aid has partnered with the Mozambique NGO Reencontro to help improve the lives of over 4,000 children orphaned by AIDS. Reencontro trains community activists and leaders to help provide food, educational materials, and counseling to the orphans. Each child has two activists who work with him/her to ensure that they eat properly, attend school, and stay healthy. Additionally, Reencontro works with other organizations to ensure the care of people infected with AIDS and work to prevent the spread of the disease.
