Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We address the pet over-population problem that leads to the euthanasia of adoptable pets by rescuing at risk animals, spaying/neutering and finding them families.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Kibble Connection
The fourth Saturday of every month we hand out pet food to those in need in partner with Loaves and Fishes.
Cold Noses, Warm Hearts
It can be very cold outside in the winter here in Kalamazoo. Our four legged friends need shelter from the cold just as much as those with two. We provide insulated dog houses for free for dogs that are forced to live outside.
My Sister's House
Women living in a domestic violet situation hesitate leaving if they know they have to leave a pet behind. We partner with YWCA to help those women by housing their pet. Once they complete the YWCA program, they are able to take their pet home, fully medically updated for free.
Kalamazeuter
At least once per year, the SPCA partners with local vets to offer free spay/neuter surgeries to dogs that live in areas of low income.
Pet Adoption
After animals have been taken in, provided medical care including spay/neuter surgery, they are then available for adoption to the public.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our vision is to end senseless euthanasia and have a no-kill community in West Michigan and beyond.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We work with local municipalities to take in unwanted, adoptable cats and dogs that are at risk of being euthanized for space or time limits. All of the animals are spayed or neutered before being rehomed to reduce the number of unwanted litters that would likely end up at the municipal Animal Controls. We also take efforts to reduce the causes of pet homelessness such as providing pet food to low income individuals, offering free spay/neuter days for publicly owned animals and educating the public and volunteers on pet ownership and care.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have staff and volunteers that regularly participate in the programs to make them happen; they go and pull animals that need to be rescued, portion out and pass out food, help transport and organize the spay/neuter events, etc. We have a small in-house medical facility that allows us to care for all of the animals in our care and a specialized facility for housing and adopting those animals once ready. We also have a behaviorist on staff that helps to create specialized plans for reducing overall stress on the animals and training plans for dogs that need extra attention.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have been honored for the last 2 years to be presented with the award from Michigan Pet Fund Alliance for the Limited Admission Shelter with the Most Adoptions and a greater than 98% live release rate. And, the number of counties in West Michigan that have made it to No-Kill status continues to increase. Kalamazoo County is not yet there but each year, we get a little closer.
