Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Unified Theater's ultimate goal is to create a fully inclusive community where differences no longer define us, everyone is celebrated for their unique abilities and contributions, and inclusion is real. This inclusive community will be built and sustained by the young people who are empowered to lead this change movement through Unified Theater's training and programming. In order to spread this perspective even wider, Unified Theater seeks to become a larger voice and more visible thought leader in the national inclusion discussion, while also becoming a leader in identifying, implementing, and modelling inclusive practices. Ultimately, we want to move students along a continuum from a general awareness of inclusion to making it a personal value that is incorporated into every action and word long after their time in a Unified Theater program.

REAL INCLUSION:- Provide 'Get Included' training to students and teachers on what inclusion means and does not mean and strategies for facilitating inclusion.- Follow an inclusive model that rejects labels, buddies, helpers, community service models or any other method that promotes hierarchy, tokenism, or paternalism.- Focus on inclusion across all barriers. We emphasize inclusion of youth with disabilities but also promote and encourage inclusion across background, interest, age, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and beyond. Unified Theater programs are often the most diverse after-school programs within a school.
CELEBRATE CREATIVITY: - Affiliate with regional professional theaters who support the creative process from training to production night.- Provide 'Get Creative' training that trains students and teachers on theater principals, production processes, storytelling, and creative leadership.- Allow students to oversee, lead, and experience every element of the arts from stage direction, choreography, playwriting, stage craft, visual arts, music, digital arts, photography, and beyond.
EMPOWER YOUTH TO LEAD: - Host regional 'Spotlight Summits' that bring together students and teachers for a day-long leadership training.- Provide handbooks, online learning, and technical assistance to support student leaders in their schools.- Engage youth within the organization as leaders including as Board Members, interns, advisory group members, external advocates, and beyond.
DIFFERENCES NO LONGER DEFINE US: - Focus on inclusion across all barriers including ability, interest, background, and lifestyle.- Develop skills in young people around empathy, diversity appreciation, community building, and effective communication.- Run campaigns, provide talks, and focus on external marketing that challenge perceptions of disability, promote inclusion, and share best-practices.
