Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Rural communities are under-resourced and under-funded, and unable to support local public libraries. Literacy levels are typically lower in rural communities because children have limited access to quality reading material.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Children's Book Project Grant
We recognize the importance of public libraries in rural communities. Libraries are often the center of the community, where people come together to learn and share ideas. Providing quality children’s books to rural public libraries ensures an opportunity for active engagement within the community and lifelong learning.
When reviewing grant applications we consider the following library and community characteristics:
the library's financial need
the population of the community the library serves
the library's proximity to urban communities
the number of children who visit the library and check out books
the activities the library provides to the children they serve
The Pilcrow Foundation provides a 2-to-1 match to rural public library grant recipients who contribute $200-$400 through Friends of the Library or other local sponsors. Thus libraries that are awarded a grant through Children’s Book Project Program qualify to receive up to $1200 worth (at retail value) of new, quality, hardcover children's books.
Children's Book Project Disaster Relief Program
The Pilcrow Foundation is pleased to offer a limited number of special non-matching grants through our Children’s Book Project program to libraries serving rural communities in the United States affected by recent tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, or other natural disasters.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our mission is to provide new, quality, hardcover children's books to rural public libraries across the United States.
We recognize the importance of public libraries in rural communities. Libraries are often the center of the community, where people come together to learn and share ideas. Providing quality children's books to rural public libraries ensures an opportunity for active engagement within the community and lifelong learning.
We know that reading to and with children everyday and providing them with frequent opportunities to read on their own are important activities for literacy development. Literacy is the greatest gift we can give to our children; the public library is where we can start.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Pilcrow Foundation, a national non-profit public charity, provides a 2-to-1 match to rural public libraries that receive a grant through its Children's Book Project and contribute $200-$400 through a local sponsors for the purchase of up to $1200 worth (at retail value) of new, quality, hardcover children's books.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Tax-deductible donations to The Pilcrow Foundation supports rural public libraries dollar for dollar. Each dollar donor contribute allows us to provide rural public libraries that receive a grant through the Children's Book Project program with one dollar's worth of books.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In 3 years, quadrupled the numbers of libraries receiving books from The Pilcrow Foundation. We hope to continue this steady growth each year. Our goal is to put books into the hands of children living in rural communities. Each donation helps us achieve that goal.
