Mission

Creating magical and memorable experiences through the power of symphonic music.

Notes from the nonprofit

COVID-19 continues to have a negative impact on our Orchestra's ticket sales. Many of our long-term season ticket holders have stayed away from our concerts due to age, health, or can no longer drive at night. The board and staff produced a Covid Recovery Plan to develop ways to raise new revenue and to address the projected losses from operations over the next three years.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Annual funding of the concert season is a consistent issue. With corporate sponsorships decreasing due to an abundance of increased asks, we seek out more business and corporate support from smaller companies that our mission could help to impact with employee retention and recruitment. It is vital to a region to have a vibrant arts and culture provider to enrich the lives of everyone in the community. We struggle to increase the funding level so that we can move forward with addressing the challenges of increasing diversity and inclusion in our audiences and musicians.

A Journey Through Time and Space

Our 2023-2024 concert season is going to be something special! The season opens with John Williams’ Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Nielsen’s Helios, and Holst’s beloved The Planets, featuring a synchronized overhead projection. Our holiday pops concert kicks off the holiday season with the musical traditions of the season and will feature three local guest vocalists in one unforgettable holiday celebration. Then, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring world famous pianist Alessio Bax, Cossack Dance, and Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Our 4th concert features Mozart's Clarinet Concerto with our own Principal Clarinet, Kennen White, in a celebration and display of spirit and virtuosity and then Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Our season finale will go where no one has gone before. J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2009 film in the Temple Theatre with the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra playing the film score by Michael Giacchino live to the film! Don't miss this awesome live experience!!

The Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra is geared toward advanced middle & high school-aged string players and high school wind, brass, and percussion players. It has members from Vassar to Mount Pleasant, from Unionville to Frankenmuth, and everywhere in between! Rehearsals are on Sundays from 2-5 pm at Saginaw Valley State University. The mission of the Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra is to provide a rich and rewarding educational experience for students wishing to expand their knowledge of music. Three 8-week sessions are scheduled each season with a concert performance at the Temple Theatre after each session.

Population(s) Served
Children and youth

50 concert tickets are available for each of our concerts to be distributed to assisted living facilities, underserved residents, and Veterans groups throughout Saginaw County. This has enabled the facilities to provide their residents with a "night out" to experience a live concert performance and helps to build a relationship with the Orchestra and orchestral music with people that would not otherwise be able to attend a live concert performance.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Orchestra's goal is to provide an avenue and opportunity of ALL of the residents of the region to attend enjoy the excitement of a live concert performance. We are working on programs to increase our brand to young people and offer special pricing for them to attend performances. We want to have a more diverse audience, to promote equality and inclusion in our performances and marketing. The orchestra is working on providing an opportunity for residents of underserved areas to participate in the experience of performances in a beautifully restored, historic facility performed by world-class musicians.

To succeed in capturing our goals, the organization has shaped the board of directors to be more diverse to be more open to the ideas and opportunities that they bring to the table. The organization is more dedicated to addressing these issues through committees that are focused on the methodology of how to get a change to happen within our budgetary constraints.

We have a dedicated board that is engaged and focused on making the orchestra more vital, accountable and affordable in the future to all residents.

The orchestra has been able to lower our average age of concert-goers by almost 10 years in the past five years. We have done this through marketing efforts and offering more performances and experiences that are attractive to younger people. The orchestra has also made it more affordable for younger patrons to attend.
