Alverno College

The student body, numbering approximately 2,200, is drawn largely from Southeast Wisconsin. The college offers two timeframes for students to complete their degrees- Weekday and Weekend College. What distinguishes Alverno from virtually all other colleges and attracts attention from educators around the world is its dynamic approach to teaching. Students are expected to acquire the knowledge traditionally associated with a baccalaureate degree and master 8 complex abilities needed to apply that knowledge effectively throughout their lives. The abilities are analysis, problem solving, communication, social interaction, valuing in decision making, effective citizenship, global perspective taking, and aesthetic responsiveness. Faculty in the 24 liberal arts and professional areas have reshaped all of their courses to ensure student development of these abilities. They have also designed systematic programs of performance assessment to measure student demonstration of the abilities at progressively higher levels of sophistication and to reinforce self-learning.
