What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Fostering a land ethic through the legacy of Aldo Leopold
Building upon the vision Aldo Leopold enunciated in A Sand County Almanac and other works, the Aldo Leopold Foundation actively seeks to promote care of natural resources and foster an ethical relationship between people and land. Field trips for students and adults to the forests, wetlands, and prairies of the original Leopold family farm and 'Shack' provide an outdoor classroom for exploring ecological relationships. The Foundation also sponsors seminars, workshops, and special training programs to provide private landowners and public land managers with the tools they need to achieve their own 'Land Ethic.' Demonstrating this ethic on our own property outside Baraboo, Wisconsin, ALF staff, interns, and volunteers seek to restore the ecological health and integrity of the prairie, oak savanna, woodland, and riparian communities once abundant in this area. Staff also work closely with private landowners to protect and maintain rare prairie and savanna remnants.
Future Leaders Program
This program supports fellows at career stages ranging from collegiate to post-graduate to mid-career. Regardless of their stage, all fellows receive a life-enriching experience framed by Aldo Leopold’s call for a respectful relationship between people and land. Explore our various fellowships below!
Land Stewardship
We are committed to ongoing stewardship of the pines, prairies, and floodplain forests that make up the historic Leopold Shack property and surrounding 600 acres.
We also partner with neighboring landowners, agencies, and conservation groups to protect and conserve the larger landscape. Our property is part of the Leopold-Pine Island Important Bird Area (IBA), one of Wisconsin’s reserves for rare and declining grassland birds.
