Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Habitat brings together the community to build homes, community and hope. Our scorecard this year calls for 14 new homes, 2 rehabs, 4 sponsored homes with our sister chapter in El Salvador, 14 families served through home repair and 20 families served through financial capability courses. We also service about 200 family mortgages annually.

HFHDC has more than 3000 volunteers, $1.2 million in donations, $1.6 million in combined sales from our two ReStores, and additionally we receive about $300,000 in mortgage payments. We bring all of these contributions together in a partnership with families of modest means to achieve the goals described above.

With 31 years’ experience, a strong balance sheet that includes mortgages we can monetize to local banks, land and buildings we both own and rent, Habitat is a strong organization. Habitat has the human capital of 32 staff and 3,000 volunteers to execute our strategic plan, annual business plans and business metric systems.

HFHDC started out by building 1 to 2 homes per year. We have since grown to a neighborhood developer, on our 5th major development project and having closed more than 287 homes in Dane County. In addition, our organization has three new programs including home repair, financial capability courses and advocacy.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
  • We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
Policies and processes
  • We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
