NEHEMIAH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

aka Nehemiah Center for Urban Leadership Development   |   Madison, WI   |  nehemiah.org

Mission

Nehemiah engages the greater Madison community to empower African American individuals, families, and communities to bring about hope, transformation, and justice. Nehemiah addresses the needs of the entire family by meeting their emotional, spiritual, academic, social, physical and economic concerns. In order to interrupt the cycles of poverty, racism and discrimination that many families face, we concentrate on prevention, early intervention, education and restoration.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Youth Education & Leadership

Nehemiah’s Youth Education & Leadership programs serve K-12 youth. We develop academic and leadership skills, foster positive racial identity and nurture emotional, social and spiritual growth.

ACE (Academic Center for Excellence) develops the academic talents, leadership skills and character of elementary age children. Through year-round programming we build lasting relationships with the children and their families and we foster academic, emotional, social and spiritual growth.

MID (My IDentity) is our program to develop leadership skills in middle school students. Many of these participants serve as “Junior Coaches” in the summer ACE program.

BROTHER (Building Real Opportunities That Help Everyone Rise) is Nehemiah’s strategic program reaching African American middle school boys, guiding them to a productive, healthy manhood. BROTHER’s year-round programming combines the power of a same race mentor with a robust active learning strategy centered on topics such as racial identity, character and working toward successful futures.

LIGHT (Learning Is our Greatest Hope for Tomorrow) reaches out to high school students to support them as they pursue graduating from high school and going on to family supporting jobs or college. Through building trust and providing academic support we empower young men and women to achieve their goals and dreams.

Madison Inspirational Youth Choir is a youth gospel choir that works to spread the message of “hope, strength and the power to overcome.” Participants develop discipline, skills and teamwork as they work via the arts. They also focus on being a safe community for one another where they can grow in character and leadership.

Population(s) Served

Our Reentry program provides a wide array of culturally competent and relevant services to meet the needs of men returning to our community from jail or prison.

HOUSING: Our emergency and transitional housing promotes successful reentry through preventing homelessness.

COACHING: Our reentry and recovery coaching, Man Up, increases the likelihood that ex-offenders successfully transition back to the community.

ADVOCACY: Our assistance in helping these men build self-respect, develop healthy relationships, and get jobs makes it possible for these men to rebuild their lives.

EMPLOYMENT: Our employment initiatives connect men with opportunities throughout Dane County, and we offer them the support they need to succeed in the workplace.

Population(s) Served

Our family and community wellness program provides chaplaincy services to some of Dane County's poorest neighborhoods. Our efforts ensure that individuals and families can access essential services and receive support for healthy living and healthy choices for the mind, body, soul and spirit.

Population(s) Served

To help Madison move beyond current economic inequalities we are building wealth in the African American community through an Entrepreneurial Loan Fund that supports the expansion and essential upgrades of existing African American owned small businesses and which also helps launch new African American owned businesses.

Population(s) Served

Nehemiah develops, prepares and connects emerging African American leaders through a 9-week Leadership Institute.

Participants have the opportunity to work together to develop and implement community-based projects that they believe will address a community issue that they’ve collectively identified and determined to work on and is aligned with Justified Anger's "Our Madison Plan".
