What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

K-12 Afterschool Programs

The LCEC's licensed elementary program, Youth Resource Center programming for middle school youth, and Teen Build Up! for high school youth enhance educational, developmental, safety, and recreational opportunities for more than 600 Madison area youth each year. These young people (nearly all of them youth of color and/or from low-income households) receive tutoring, explore college and career options, volunteer, exercise their bodies and imaginations, and connect with caring adults.

Population(s) Served

The Lussier Food Pantry is open two days a week and offers shoppers nutritionally balanced food items. Monthly, the Lussier Food Pantry serves between 400-500 individual youth, adults, and seniors.

Economically disadvantaged people

Year-round, the LCEC employs an industrious team of young adults with disabilities who benefit from essential vocational training. Memorial High School provides two extraordinary special education assistants who oversee menu planning, meal preparation, service, and clean-up. The Breakfast Optimists get a fresh, hot meal each Tuesday morning. And kids in our programs get a hot, nutritious afternoon meal three days a week during the school year and a hot, nutritious breakfast five days a week during the summer, funded by the Second Harvest Kids Café Program.

Population(s) Served

Our monthly community dinners draw more than 100 people from surrounding neighborhoods to share a meal and build community. Programs range from science club experiments and dance lessons, to outdoor adventures and smores. Mark your calendars for our next exciting gathering!

Population(s) Served
Adults

Every summer more than 60 elementary and middle-school students attend a free eight-week summer camp. Campers enjoy action-packed morning activities, a hot nutritious lunch provided by our Kids Café, and afternoons of learning and growing. Summer activities are focused on health and fitness, arts and creativity, and building leadership.

Through cooking clubs, field trips, science experiments, art projects, dance workshops, swimming lessons, hiking exclusions, canoeing lessons, gardening club, service projects and so much more, children and youth learn, grow, and explore.

Population(s) Served

The Jane Burrows Buffett Scholars program supports the college aspirations of young people during the years leading up to higher education. Annually, 8th grade students will apply, and 4 are chosen based on their commitment to help others, determination to overcome hardships, and demonstrated potential to attend college. Starting in 9th grade, scholars receive intensive academic support and guidance, leadership training, assistance in planning for and applying to college, as well as funds for school supplies and self-development activities.
