What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

An unprecedented number of patients and their families are traveling to Milwaukee to access critically needed health care. There are many reasons for this including the regionalization of healthcare services and the expansion of facilities and advancements in medical care offered by Milwaukee area hospitals. Many of these out-of-town families are unable to afford a hotel stay due to mounting healthcare costs, lost job wages, and travel costs. For a procedure such as a bone marrow transplant, the cancer patients is required to stay near the hospital for six to nine weeks. To stay in a hotel for this long in Milwaukee could easily cost $10,000. With over a third of our guests reporting a household income under $30,000, hotels are simply not an option for many families. Unless patients have access to affordable lodging, they are at risk of not accessing needed care. Also, families may not be able to stay together during a medical crisis because it is simply too expensive.

Kathy's House

Kathy's House is here for families when they need it most, during a medical crisis. Since 2001, we've help[ed more than 17,000 out-of-town patients and families to access medical care in Milwaukee. We keep families together by providing affordable lodging and caring support. Research has found that patients who have family nearby have better outcomes. Kathy's House accepts referrals from all Milwaukee area hospitals, or patients of all ages.

Kathy's House provides its guests with privacy and comfort in eighteen individual suites that feature a queen bed and a twin bed with a private bathroom, small refrigerator, and a small television. Sheets, towels and toiletries are also available. The House includes a fully equipped kitchen, communal dinning room, living room, computer center, library, Wi-Fi and laundry facilities. A van is available to provide transportation to and from the hospital during business hours.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Kathy’s House is a hospital guest house committed to providing affordable lodging and caring support in a “home away from home” environment for families who need to travel to Milwaukee for medical care.

By providing lodging and support to patients and their caregivers, Kathy’s House helps patients to access medical care. These patients are largely from lower-income households and live in rural areas where access to needed healthcare is a barrier to wellness. As well, we allow families to be together during a medical crisis. We are the only hospital guest house in Milwaukee that serves patients of all ages, as well as their caregivers. Since 2001, we have served more than 18,000 out-of-town patients and family members. These guests represent children, young adults, adults, older adults, veterans, and people with special needs. Most guests are over 55 and live on a fixed income.
