What we aim to solve
Thanks to a complex history that includes redlining and civic under-investment, North Minneapolis lags behind the rest of the City of Minneapolis in amenities, investments, and quality-of-life indicators. While the challenges of our community are many, there are is also tremendous cultural wealth in the connectedness of our neighbors, and the richness of our history, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. PCYC exists to ensure that North Minneapolis youth, families and individuals have ready access to the tools of a great future. With accessible programs that educate, nourish and inspire, PCYC charts a course for a bright future for Northside residents.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
PCYC's 2017 – 2019 Strategic Goals
I. Increase youth opportunities for school and life success.
PCYC will promote the academic and social-emotional development of over 2,000 youth each year by offering outstanding, innovative experiences in its Arts & Technology High School, its elementary Out-of-School-Time programs and at the Capri Theater.
II. Complete the Capri Theater Renaissance project, leading the way for a bright North Minneapolis future.
PCYC will fulfill its long-term aim to “bring up the lights on West Broadway" with the completion of the Capri renovation and expansion including a state-of-the-art Teen Tech and Innovation Center and new performance, exhibition and community gathering spaces.
III. Sustain the mission.
In 2018, PCYC will celebrate its 65th anniversary of service to North Minneapolis area children and youth as a strong, forward-looking organization that's embracing its next generation of leadership.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
I. Increase youth opportunities for school and life success.
1) Equip students to thrive academically and developmentally.
Incorporate social-emotional education, the arts, and technology applications and training in all aspects of programming.

2) Prepare students for success in work, career and community.
Ensure that each student has opportunities to explore future work and career pathways and to develop an individualized post-high school plan for success.
Incorporate post-secondary education and workplace-readiness skills across all program areas.
Increase the breadth and depth of youth apprenticeships and hands-on leadership opportunities.
Offer learning structures that span and link our high school students to college, and/or vocational tracks and certifications.

2) Finalize architectural plans and aim to break ground on the new Capri complex in summer 2017.
3) Develop the programmatic vision and plan for initial operations in the new Capri complex, building a sustainable program and operating budget that balances contributed and earned income.
4) Collaborate with private developers and public entities to realize the vision for the Capri Block as the jewel of West Broadway.
III. Sustain the mission
1) Stay watchful of how well we are achieving the mission.
Refine and implement systems that allow us to continually gather and use input from stakeholders Operate with a “best practice mindset" that includes a strong organizational learning culture, leading edge program design, and a focus on outcomes.
2) Ensure long-term financial health
Increase capacity to support a high performance fundraising function as a partnership between board and staff.
Continue the board's strong fiscal leadership and enhance the financial and stewardship literacy and practices of the management staff.
3) Develop short and long-term plans for executive director and key leader transitions.
Create a clear vision for the organization's leadership needs, and devise and implement systems to preserve institutional knowledge and business continuity.
4) Strengthen board and staff effectiveness.
Implement training and practices to ensure productive interaction and collaboration across all PCYC program areas.
5) Enhance the profile of all of PCYC's programs, achievements and aspirations.
Increase the use of effective branding and targeted marketing techniques.
6) Continually seek opportunities to strengthen and increase strategic partnerships with public, private and nonprofit organizations and volunteers in order to advance our mission and better serve the community.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
PCYC was established in 1954 as a community center to improve the lives of youth and families. Since opening our doors all those years ago, over 100,000 people, mostly youth, have participated in the various educational, social, recreational and neighborhood programs offered by PCYC. Our annual reports, including financials and service data, are available to the public at our website, www.pcyc-mpls.org.
We are proud of our long history of service in North Minneapolis, and in particular, of our dedication to the underserved youth in our community. Our accomplishments have been noted over the years, but perhaps none are more meaningful that the words of a former participant, “Thank you for giving children an actual advantage in life, when they may feel there aren't any."
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Recent accomplishments include:
1) In the 2015-16 school year, 97% of PYC's credit-eligible students earned their high school diploma, and 100% of graduates had plans for postsecondary education, a career path, or military service. This is the highest percentage in PYC history, and we anticipate similar positive outcomes by the end of June this year.
2) We have increased the role of social/emotional learning in our out-of-school-time program, applying best practices in afterschool education to our already-successful program that serves as a model for Northside Achievement Zone and others.
3) Completing our 2017-19 Strategic Plan, charting a bold course for the organization while building upon our organization's core strengths to increase youth opportunities, develop the Capri Theater and sustain the mission.
Yet to be accomplished:
We are midway into a very successful capital campaign to renovate and expand the Capri Theater. We look forward to breaking ground in 2018, and opening the new Capri Theater in 2019.
