What we aim to solve
Heartworm disease is rampant in dogs living in the southern states and the impounds in Texas have the highest euthanasia rates in the country sometimes as high as 75% kill. We strive to save agreeable dogs that are positive for heartworm and struggle to bear the cost which is typically more than $500 per dog. More than 2 million cats and dogs are euthanized in the US annually and the only solution is to assertively pursue spay and neutering for all pets. By offering low cost surgery for low income pet owners, conducting Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) projects in feral colonies and farm sites and educating the community about the need for altering their pets . Some cats and dogs arrive at BENCHS in good health and up to date on vaccinations but the majority need basic care such as vaccines and worming and most need to be spayed or neutered. Many arrive with health challenges such as injuries requiring surgery or advanced dental disease requiring very costly veterinary procedures.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In 2017 BENCHS took in and treated successfully 16 heartworm positive dogs and this year to date (July 2018) BENCHS has taken in 23 heartworm positive dogs. They are placed in loving foster homes and the long and expensive heartworm treatment is completed.
Our aim is to increase the number of heartworm positive dogs in 2019 to 100 with expanded fosters and financial support for the treatment.
BENCHS is committed to spaying or neutering all animals in our program. We host 2 agency spay neuter mobiles each month for the community to access low cost surgeries. We partner with area rescues and shelters to complete TNR on feral colonies of cats. We urge families that participate in our free pet food program to get their pets fixed also.
We aim increase the involvement of local veterinarians to allow us to provide the medical care required for the cats and dogs that arrive at our door.
