What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Colin MacLaurin Fellows Program
The Colin MacLaurin Fellows Program is a rigorous interdisciplinary program that started in 2013. It guides student through an original curriculum designed to develop them as Christian leaders in their chosen fields of study and future careers. Fellows apply to join an annual cohort of 12 students that meets every other week during the academic year for three-hour dinners and seminar-style discussions.
In the fall, the curriculum helps students understand the challenges facing Christian leaders in the modern world and the resources Christianity provides for understanding their vocations in their respective fields. Fellows also begin applying these theological resources to their discipline, developing a Faith & Learning Portfolio.
In the spring, fellows present these in-progress portfolios for discussion with the other fellows and visiting Christian faculty in their fields. They also participate in two weekend retreats each year, one with a visiting speaker on the topic of vocation.
Reading Groups on Christianity & Culture
Our reading groups are open to the entire community—faculty, staff, and students from the U of M, as well as pastors and and laity from local churches and even interested non-Christians. The books discussed cover a broad range of topics and genres, including theology, history, public affairs, literature, science and social science, vocation and work, and more. Led by community members, students, faculty, and MacLaurin staff, the reading groups are some of our most popular programs.
Campus Lectures
MacLaurinCSF sponsored lectures by visiting and local scholars––in fields such as law, medicine, natural science, and the humanities––who discussed the intersection of their Christian faith and scholarship. These lectures helped attendees consider and discuss together enduring human questions from a Christian perspective. In 2014-15, approximately 1400 participants attended these lectures.
Our 2014-15 lecturers:
- Patrick Deneen (Notre Dame, political theory)
- Joseph Pearce (independent scholar, literature)
- David Skeel (UPenn, law)
- Philip Rolnick (St. Thomas, theology)
- Daniel Sulmasy (UChicago, medicine/theology)
- William Cavanaugh (DePaul, theology)
- Gloria Halverson (CMDA, medicine)
- David Deavel (St. Thomas, Catholic Studies)
- David Miller (Princeton, religion)
- William Hurlbut (Stanford, neuroscience)
Study Center (library, coffee hours, etc.)
Our study center on Cleveland Avenue, just across the street from the St. Paul campus, provides study space for students, a lending library of over 3,000 volumes on Christian theology and culture, meeting spaces for our reading groups and curricular programs, a full kitchen, and office space for staff. In addition to reading groups, our study center also hosts week coffee hours and "Fridays at 4" talks for students..
