What we aim to solve
For too many people in our community, housing is not affordable and not accessible. The lack of simple, decent housing leads to instability and compounds challenges for families. We aim to help hard-working families achieve homeownership, and build strength, stability, and self-sufficiency.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Home Building
Northwoods Habitat for Humanity partners with people who cannot get a traditional bank loan to build simple, decent homes. Qualified homebuyers contribute at least 300 hours of "sweat equity" to build their home alongside Habitat staff and volunteers. Homebuyers receive a no-interest loan from Habitat and make payments that are no more than 30% of their household income until the mortgage is satisfied. Since 1990, Northwoods Habitat for Humanity has completed 60 homes in partnership with community members in need of adequate housing.
A Brush with Kindness
A Brush with Kindness is a program of Northwoods Habitat for Humanity that helps low-income homeowners by offering exterior home improvements. Volunteer teams work to improve the condition of homes by painting, landscaping, and performing minor exterior repairs at minimal cost to homeowners who would be unable to complete home repairs on their own. This program is for homeowners earning 60 percent or less of the area median income. Applications are accepted year-round.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our primary goals include creating a sustainable positive impact in the lives of people of our community, to have a widening impact in affordable housing, to engage the community in achieving our mission, and create organizational stability and growth.
It is the goal of NHFH to have a sustainable positive impact on the lives of people. This includes both people directly served, and those in the surrounding community. NHFH believes that through working on its mission, lives are transformed and all those who participate benefit in positive ways.
It is the goal of NHFH to widen its impact in affordable housing. NHFH seeks to maximize its impact to drive broader engagement in housing solutions, support for market development, and demand for policies and systems that create new opportunities for those in need of adequate housing.
It is the goal of NHFH to engage the community to work together to achieve our mission. When the broad community is engaged in addressing the urgent need for adequate, affordable shelter, we all become less vulnerable and more resilient.
It is the goal of NHFH to maintain and promote organizational stability and growth. Building off of the scaling strategy outlined by HFHI, success starts with having a stable and growing organization. NHFH will continue to act thoughtfully, and responsibly to ensure maximum impact.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Sustain Housing Inventory
Promote a Better Understanding of NHFH in the Community
Increase Home Buyer and ABWK Applicants
Simplify Board and Committee Structure
Expand the ReStore
Promote Post Home-Buyer Engagement
Provide Community Education Opportunities
Recruit Volunteers
Implement Succession Plan
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our organization is more than capable of meeting our strategic goals. First of all, we are led by an experienced Executive Director, Geri Hickerson, who has been in her position since 2006. Additionally, we have a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors who have a variety of diverse skills, backgrounds, and experiences. We also have several talented staff who are well trained and have a passion for our mission. Next, we have a great core group of volunteers who have been serving the community through Habitat for many years. And, finally, we have the full support of Habitat International - which includes a network of other Habitat affiliates and a plethora of knowledge and resources.
In addition to everything listed above, Northwoods Habitat for Humanity is a community organization that is well-supported by local governments, community groups, local businesses, and individuals. Our community believes in our work, and steps up when called upon.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have made progress toward many of our strategic goals since the implementation of our strategic plan. For example, we currently own over 15 lots in the community, our homebuyer inquiries and applications are increasing, we are conducting many educational presentations within the community each year, we have achieved financial stability, and have an approved succession plan.
