What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We alleviate political, economic, and social disparities. While minorities are still struggling with some inequalities or inequities in this country, we think all types of disparities begin from the lack of access to education. We do not claim that minorities should be given benefits all the time. We hope supporting education would bring changes gradually – close socio-economic gaps between different communities and regardless of their race, ethnicity, and zipcode, all kids should be able to access opportunities.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

1. Yearly Goal: to choose financially disadvantaged but academically excellent college students and to award scholarships for them to continue their education

2. Vision:

• Strengthen multigenerational/intergenerational relations and immigrant communities :
we strengthen multigenerational and intergenerational relations and immigrant communities since primary support for the SSFA comes from the first generation of Korean American immigrants and scholarship recipients are 2nd or 3rd generations who are born here in the U.S. The Foundation aims to connect different generations with each other to continue the minority heritage and legacies of immigrants and integrate them into Mainstream American culture. It would help our students build their unique identity and strength and ultimately improve diversity and inclusion in this country.
• Secure the future of young generations
• Foster today’s Scholars and tomorrow’s leaders
• Alleviate political, economic, and social disparities by supporting education

1. Engage the first generation of minority immigrants as long-term donors who succeed in small business or entrepreneurship and would like to give back to communities especially for continuing their community's unique legacy and heritage by supporting the education of next generations.
2. Target corporate donors whose philanthropic/corporate responsibility initiatives are aligned with our mission.
3. Track alumni and other young leaders who are able to engage more contributors with their compelling stories and testimonials which prove the impacts made by us.

1. More than 100 loyal individual donors who are community and small business leaders who are interested in the future of next generations.
2. Highly-committed Board of Directors and Officers who are in charge of operations, fundraising, and thorough scholarship selection procedures and their in-kind donations for office space and supplies, accounting and scholarship and other events management.
3. More than 10 volunteers who assist the Board of Directors and Officers

The Sejong Scholarship Foundation of America awarded $556,000 to 581 students over the last 21 years.

Alumni Testimonials

“ I 'M THANKFUL THAT THIS SCHOLARSHIP DID
NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THE APPLICATION
PROCESS ALSO GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY
TO CONTEMPLATE HOW MY PRIOR
EXPERIENCES HAVE SHAPED MY IDENTITY AS
A KOREAN-AMERICAN. . . . I WOULDN'T HAVE
MADE IT TO WHERE I AM WITHOUT THE
COMMUNITIES AND INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE
SUPPORTED ME. . . . "

" I FOUND OUT ABOUT SSFA THROUGH THE
KOREAN SOCIETY OF MARYLAND, WHERE I
MET A LOT OF INCREDIBLE AND INSPIRING
ASIAN/KOREAN AMERICAN STUDENTS WITH
SIMILAR DREAMS. SSFA ENCOURAGED ME TO
KEEP WORKING HARD, AND REMAIN POSITIVE
WHILE I WAS WORKING TOWARD TO EARN MY
UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE. "

The foundation has plans for another 20 years: Develop Internal leadership to continue and advance the foundation’s legacies, utilize New media and tech initiatives for outreach, start Alumni development to track more impacts, build New fundraising strategies for sustainability, and Expand its scholarship program to other minority communities for diversity & inclusion.
