American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
With competing forces acting upon the practice of medicine today, the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation aims to support physiatrists (physicians practicing physical medicine and rehabilitation) and their efforts to keep current by providing an independent, peer-defined set of standards to demonstrate expertise in their field.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and PM&R subspecialties
The intent of the certification process is to provide
assurance to the public that a certified medical specialist has successfully completed an accredited
residency training program and an evaluation, including an examination process, designed to assess the
knowledge, experience, and skills essential for quality patient care.
Maintenance of Certification (MOC) in PM&R and PM&R subspecialties
The guiding principle of the ABPMR Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program is to foster excellence in patient care by encouraging, stimulating, and supporting physiatrists’ continuing education over a lifetime of practice in PM&R.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
In partnership with its diplomates, the ABPMR will continue to provide a dynamic, reliable, and valid certification process that:
-Is transparent, valuable, and relevant throughout a physiatrist's career
-Facilitates lifelong learning and promotes professionalism
-Supports improvements in quality of care and the functional outcomes of patients
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Acknowledging that one-time board certification doesn't reflect or support evolving medical knowledge and practice, the ABPMR is working with diplomates to innovate its continuing board certification process for increased relevance, meaning, and value. To that end, the ABPMR board of directors has defined three main transformational strategies tat have the largest potential to project ABPMR into the future, guided by our mission and vision. In addition, five enabling strategies were identified to support and underpin the transformational strategies.
Transformational Strategies
-Formative/Integrated Assessment: Design a formative and integrated assessment process for certification that facilitates learning throughout a physiatrist’s career.
-Trusted Convener: Become a trusted convener to support dynamic learning and innovation that positively impacts the future and direction of the field of physiatry.
-Objective/Data-Driven: Pursue an objective and data-driven approach to assessing the impact of participating in ABPMR certification that will guide ABPMR decision making and innovation.
Enabling Strategies
-Structure and Function: Revise the organizational structure as needed to ensure appropriate resources and consistent understanding of roles and responsibilities.
-Finance: Enhance financial management tools and capabilities to support plan implementation.
-Partnerships: Develop a defined strategy/approach to guide partnership and collaboration efforts.
-Communication: Develop detailed communication plans and strategies that support plan implementation.
-Research: Achieve consensus on strategic value research and develop a detailed research plan.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The ABPMR is a physician-led organization -- led by physicians, for physicians. ABPMR governance includes a board, operational committees, program committees, and includes a public member. These groups are made up of a diverse set of physiatrists representing an array of practice focuses and subspecialties, geographic locations, and practice types.
More than 500 volunteers help the ABPMR develop and review test items, participate in pilots for innovative new programs, select and review questions for examinations, set exam standards, and review the results of every examination. The ABPMR employs a senior psychometrician to ensure the statistical validity of all examinations and scoring.
The ABPMR also offers a customer service team, IT department, program managers and communications support to facilitate the process of understanding and completing all requirements to become certified and then maintain that certification.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The ABPMR is working to build more meaning, value, and autonomy into its continuing board certification processes, and is enlisting the help of its diplomates at every step. A number of initiatives have already been accomplished and set in motion, while others are in progress as the organization looks to its future.
Completed:
-One-year pilot to test whether longitudinal assessment can replace the secure MOC Examination as an accurate assessment of knowledge. The pilot was a success based on four measures: MOC Examination score, performance on longitudinal assessment items, performance on clones, and user satisfaction
-Thanks to the success of the pilot, the ABPMR has implemented longitudinal assessment for PM&R (LA-PM&R) in 2020, with a rolling plan to help diplomates transition to the new process
-Implementation of longitudinal assessment for pain medicine (LA-Pain) in 2020, in partnership with the American Board of Anesthesiology
-Strengthened relationships with leadership at specialty societies
-Developed a set of financial guiding principles that codified the organization's long-standing commitment to financial transparency and sound decision-making
-Developed a tool to evaluate new initiatives, including estimating financial impact, capacity of staff, competing priorities, and metrics of success
Ongoing:
-Creation of a volunteer-led liaison program to enhance bidirectional feedback between diplomates and the board of directors
-Develop a process to integrate additional data-driven processes into decision-making
-Prioritize research topics and develop strategic partnerships for collaborative research projects

- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
