Goals & Strategy
Learn about the organization's key goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress.
Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
I. Constituencies and Member Benefits
ATA has a narrow focus but reaches across the continuum from basic research to clinical practice and surgery. ATA serves its constituencies in a dynamic way, through engaged member participation and personalization of benefits.
II. Publications and Guidelines
ATA’s official journal, THYROID, has increased its impact factor dramatically. Clinical Thyroidology, ATA’s well-distributed online publication, summarizing and providing commentary on latest thyroid research articles, reaches a wide audience of physicians. Highly regarded ATA Guidelines for the management of thyroid disease impact the quality of patient care across all specialties.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
ATA wants to ensure that the Annual Scientific Meeting continues to grow and prosper. Specific campaigns to maintain and increase valued member constituencies such as Basic scientists, pediatric endocrinologists, pathologists, young investigators, surgeons, clinicians and corporate allies are underway. Publishing technology is driving major changes in the delivery and utilization of publications. ATA views the needs and benefits to the public and to its members in the light of advanced technologies, requiring a mix of educational and strategic approaches.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The ATA has a strong, tenured and loyal staff; albeit small in number. The ATA Board of Directors provides the perspective on the field of thyroidology which is strong academically and in the field. The commitment and investment of ATA members is remarkably vital and engaged. Endowments to support thyroid research have been expanded by members, the public and industry; strengthening the impact that the ATA is able to exert on the progress of thyroid discovery.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
The ATA is actively expanding its professional journals to provide the scientist, the clinician and the surgeon with the latest information and findings in thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. The ATA is working towards an increase of continuing medical education for year round enduring value of the annual meeting. Assessing the value of the social media efforts and how the quality educational products are benefiting the public and patients is a challenge - it is easy to measure the numbers of 'followers' but more difficult to assess our impact on awareness of quality information. Major obstacles to our vision lie in the limitations of few staff and hours in the day. What works is our governance structure, our functional committees who strive to accomplish and fulfill their charge, our thyroid experts who donate time, energy and commitment to developing guidelines for clinical management of thyroid disease.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
