What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Our greatest challenge is addressing the financial impact of Iowa's decision to privatize Medicaid services in 2016. This drastic change has resulted in reduced reimbursements, reductions and/or elimination of approved services, extended waiting periods for approvals, and additional administrative requirements. Additionally, low unemployment and low wages due to low Medicaid reimbursements make finding and retaining staff very difficult.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Home and Community Based Services

Residential and housing services address the desires, goals, abilities, needs, health and safety of each individual. Services are generally long-term in nature, but may change in scope, duration, intensity or location as the needs and preferences of individuals change over time. We work with each of our members and their team to assess goals, interests and needs and provide supports in a variety of areas.

Population(s) Served

The Supported Community Living (SCL) program is designed to support and encourage individuals with disabilities and mental illness to live as independently as possible in their own homes. The goal of the program is to maintain independent living and increase involvement in the community. The program provides training to help people develop or regain skills of daily living .

Population(s) Served

Community Integration programs are offered in a variety of settings to individuals with disabilities and mental illness.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

With guidance from our accrediting organization and government partners, Mainstream works to ensure safe, stable, and healthy community living options for persons with disabilities and mental illness. In order to effectively achieve our mission, we aim to meet the requirements necessary in receiving a three year accreditation, the highest designation issued by CARF. Internally, we also work to reduce staff turnover, maintain possible revenues, meet documentation and billing standards, address safety needs, and maintain high member and stakeholder satisfaction.

Mainstream Living operates with a volunteer Board of Directors and Executive Management Team who meet regularly to address department and organizational needs and an overall strategic vision. We have a five year strategic plan, which is updated yearly and communicated to each department. We also have a number of internal committees that work specifically to address goals and meet quality assurance and corporate compliance outcomes.

Mainstream Living has a long history of providing high quality services. We are one of the largest providers in Central Iowa and recognized by our peers, accrediting agencies, and stakeholders as a strong and viable organization that meets community and member needs. Our Executive Management Team has a combined experience of more than 110 years and our average length of employment is five years - unheard of in our industry!

Mainstream Living continues to receive a three year accreditation, but will address issues as indicated by CARF. Our latest accreditation was issued in March of 2018. In regards to internal goals, all goals were achieved in 2017 with the exception of goals related to recruitment and retention. As we enter the new fiscal year, financial standing will be our greatest challenge as we identify ways in which to increase efficiencies.
