What we aim to solve
Substance misuse and abuse cause a number of problems for the residents of all ages in Clayton County. Those directly involved in substance misuse and abuse often encounter legal, financial, employment, relationship and health concerns. Those impacted by the substance abuse can experience some of these same concerns. Family members specifically and the community as a whole suffer when substance abuse goes. SASCC aims to reduce these problems through assessment, referral and support services, prevention programming, and science based information.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Substance Abuse Evaluation
Interview process and completing questionnaires. Recommendation results provided at conclusion and reported per release of information as client chooses.
Comprehensive
Assists communities in developing an organizational framework that involves individuals, groups and organizations working together to build strengths and reduce risks in their communities. These people learn how to assess and prioritize needs and create positive changes within the community.
Provides evidence based programs and science based information to youth and adult groups.
Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Community Partnerships
tobacco prevention presentations in all school districts in Clayton County, Iowa. Encourage and engage high school students in tobacco control activities. We promote and encourage tobacco free campuses and public environments. Education on health risks of tobacco use and promotion of smoke-free workplaces. We also promote use of Quitline Iowa
IA Parnterships For Success
directed toward the substance abuse prevention priorities of reducing underage drinking and youth binge drinking among individuals 12-20 years of age. The county was identified as high need based on 30-day alcohol use and binge drinking data according to the 2010, 2012, and 2014 Iowa Youth Survey. The project is expected to continue through September 2019 and will utilize the strategic prevention framework to assess needs, build community capacity, implement a strategic plan and evaluate outcomes.
County Substance Abuse Program
Services include, but are not limited to: substance abuse evaluations; information and referral services; aftercare; intervention assistance; technical assistance; education; prevention programming; interpersonal skill training; help for communities to organize themselves to respond effectively to alcohol and other drug abuse problems. SASCC continues to link with the local Board of Health and the County Board of Supervisors regarding community assessment, problem identification and services provided. SASCC does not provide primary treatment, however they do provide aftercare and recovery assistance to those who have completed primary treatment and are in need of additional support.
The above services are provided directly from funding received from the County Substance Abuse Prevention Services funding and do not overlaps with programming provided through any other IDPH funding sources.
Drug Free Communities Grant
engage individuals and organizations in all the communities included in the Clayton-Ridge Community School District in implementing an action plan relating to underage substance use. Work closely with 5C Coalition, youth, parents, and school personnel.
5C Community Coalition Grant
Assist community coalition implement strategies to reduce underage and binge drinking.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Substance Abuse Services for Clayton County, Inc.’s primary purpose is to provide education and assistance to the residents of Clayton County to inspire them to make positive decision regarding substances and choices and to ultimately lead healthy lives. We do this by offering accurate information, proven programming and support services which best meet the needs of Clayton County.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Information Programs – Our professional staff provides presentations on a wide variety of substance abuse and related topics such as: low risk drinking choices, consequences associated with binge drinking, drug-free workplace, how substance abuse impacts other areas of functioning, effects of substance abuse on families, recovery from chemical dependency, and interpersonal communications. Presentations are developed to meet the needs of the audience.
Evaluation and support – SASCC program director performs substance abuse evaluations for those charged with OWI or other substance related offenses. Evaluations are also available for work-related issues and for those who feel they may need help. Information and resources are available for family members and appropriate treatment referrals are made through our cooperative relationships with other agencies. Ongoing recovery services are available for those who have already received primary treatment and are in need of support.
Education – SASCC staff facilitates evidence-based programs for youth to provide accurate information and assist them in making positive choices. Examples include All-Stars, Life Skills and Draw the Line/Respect the Line. Other programs, such as Peer Helping, or specialty courses are available upon request.
Consultation and collaboration – Our staff are available for consultation and collaboration with businesses, healthcare agencies and community coalitions. We provide current resources, information and technical assistance to help communities and other entities more effectively address choices and problems associated with substance use and abuse. We are available to assist family members who are seeking help for their loved ones. SASCC staff also provides assistance in policy development.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
SASCC has provided assessment, referral and support services, prevention programming, and science based information to the residents of Clayton County since 1981. We provide services which affect youth ages 5-18 and all adults. SASCC continues to be licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) for assessment services and we have worked with IDPH and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to provide proven prevention programming.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
SASCC has helped to reduce youth substance use in Clayton County, as shown by the Iowa Youth Survey. We aim to continue prevention programming to ensure this trend does not increase.
