Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Our after-school program is in session five days a week for eight weeks in the fall and ten weeks in the spring. For the 2008-2009 school year we are serving 240 children in nine public schools. The major issues addressed by our program are as follows:

-Literacy: youth engage in a language-enriching curriculum that focuses on poetry, vocabulary building, written and oral communication, and self-expression.

-Physical Health: youth engage in 6-8 hours of vigorous physical exercise each week and develop a life-long appreciation of sports and health-enhancing behaviors. Students also participate in an interactive nutrition education curriculum to learn healthy eating habits.

-Community Service and Civic Responsibility: youth, design and implement community-service and research projects. Students learn that they can create change through active involvement in their communities. This leads to a sense of empowerment and ownership.

-School Bonding: students benefit from positive activities and adult role models on a daily basis during otherwise dangerous after-school hours and are motivated to attend school regularly to participate in the school-based program.
