Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Education Program

Read Horn of Africa USA and partner organizations are currently running a primary and secondary schools that serve over one thousand children in the central Somali town of Bursalah.  Located near the Somali-Ethiopian border, Bursalah was strategically chosen to serve rural and nomadic communities that have been neglected by both governmental and non-governmental organizations alike. Bursalah is also home to many internally displaced communities (IDP’s) that fled conflicts in southern Somalia.

Our educational program is the first ever in these communities and our activities range from construction of schools to training teachers and capacity building for community education committees to manage their education system. We also provide textbooks, school meals, and lodging facilities to the most vulnerable children in the community.

Our non-formal education for children, youth and adults also include life-saving information on hygiene, nutrition, health and protection. With over one thousand students and forty staff members, Bursalah School is entirely community driven initiative and is recognized as one of the best schools in the region

Population(s) Served

In Somalia, many children have lost one of or both of their parents as a result of the the endless conflict that has ravaged the country for nearly two decades.   UNICEF estimates there are over half a million orphans in Somalia. With a small number of nonprofits serving orphans and no governmental services, most of these children end up falling through the cracks.

What is Read Horn of Africa doing about it?Read Horn of Africa partners with caring individuals, foundations, and corporions to restore hope for these children.

Recently, Read Horn of Africa has partnered with another charity to support orphans in central Somawe will provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing to the most needy orphans and also focus on the education and long-term success of these orphans. The partnership has accepted one hundred (100) children into the program so far and plans to continue to expand the program as funding permits.

Future Goals:1) Expand current program to support additional needy orphans.

2) Continue to provide access to quality primary and secondary education.

3) Partner with other local non-profits that serve orphans.

Population(s) Served

We believe that child health and nutrition are strongly associated with their educational achievement. In this regard, we are working to provide basic health services by developing Bursalah health center that can provide basic health care including child and mother health care.
We have also invested in the provision of clean water. Lack of clean water in households causes thousands of children in the area to suffer needlessly from disease. Recently, Read Horn of Africa, in collaborations with other nonprofit organizations, constructed a water system that provides clean water for students and residents of Bursalah. The water system is also benefiting nomadic communities from the surrounding area
