Programs and results
What we aim to solve
We play many roles in the Quad Cities – grantmaker, convener, community organizer, knowledge broker, endowment builder, coalition builder, and more. We're committed to inviting all voices in our community to the table so we can develop and implement solutions that strengthen us all.
There are so many people, nonprofits, businesses, and municipal entities working as change makers to make the Quad Cities a great place to live, work, and play. We are a community – and a Community Foundation – with arms open to new ideas, new opportunities, and the rise of new leaders, whose voices will benefit us all.
The Community Foundation is home to the largest philanthropic source for the Quad Cities. Our donors use the Community Foundation as their vessel to make transformational gifts. Transformation is a constant, driving, strategic goal that we achieve with nimble and focused work as we position our leadership to be the philanthropic pacesetter of our greater Quad Cities home.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grants
The Foundation acts as a vehicle to serve donors with varied interests, at various levels of charitable giving. We link those donors with charitable agencies that can most efficiently carry out the objectives and desires for the funds. We offer maximum flexibility in terms of assets that can be used to create a fund, options for the use of our donors' gifts, and benefits, such as recognition and commemoration, that contributors may receive.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Community Foundation is a charitable organization created by and for a community of people. Individuals, families, businesses and organizations work with us to create permanent charitable funds that will help nonprofit organizations meet the challenges of changing times.
The Community Foundation invests and administers these charitable funds. Gifts are given for endowment, which means they are invested in perpetuity to benefit our community today and for generations to come. Each year, distributions from each of the Community Foundation's charitable funds are given or granted to worthy organizations or causes.
The Community Foundation identifies current and emerging issues, convenes leaders to tackle those issues, channels resources to address community needs, and helps our region prepare for the future. We seek to create transformational change that enhances the lives of our community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We listen. We connect. We empower. We also offer professional services and support for community members to leave their legacy for the betterment of the entire community. We do this through:
- Growing our endowment, a permanent source of philanthropic funding for charitable causes in the region.
- Helping donors to plan and carry out their charitable giving in the region, and across the country.
- Simplifying giving so donors can focus on their charitable passions and make the biggest impact they can on the causes they care about.
- Partnering with other foundations, public agencies, and the business sector to create change and bring a consistent voice of leadership to critical civic issues.
- Advancing innovative philanthropic solutions to challenging problems.
- Strengthening the region through a network of affiliate foundations who work together while also remaining a unique reflection of the community it serves.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The Community Foundation operates in compliance with the National Standards for Community Foundations as set forth by the Council on Foundations. Proudly, we were the fifth community foundation in the country to achieve this confirmation, which affirms our commitment to financial security, transparency, and accountability.
The 26 National Standards require a community foundation to document its policies in donor services, investment management, grantmaking and administration. To receive confirmation of National Standards compliance, a community foundation submits its organizational and financial policies and procedures to a rigorous peer review. We were among the first to receive accreditation, and are proud to have been re-accredited.
We focus on service—to each and every one of our donors, nonprofit partners, grant seekers, grantees and other community members involved in our work. We collaborate with our donors, and oftentimes their attorneys and other professional advisors, to design gift plans that fit every economic situation. Every day we meet with individuals to learn more about their views, their dreams for making a difference, and introduce them to great opportunities to invest in our community and in our world.
We conduct research, analyze data and conduct site visits to ensure that philanthropic dollars are maximized and well-used. We have an in-depth knowledge of the issues and needs within our community, as well as the strength of partnerships to address those needs efficiently and effectively.
We grow assets for today's opportunities and tomorrow's needs. Our nonprofit endowment partners receive professional guidance and assistance in growing their endowment assets. They can focus on their mission while we provide professional management of their funds.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1964, individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits have partnered with the Community Foundation to create charitable funds that strengthen and improve the communities in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Not only do these charitable funds enhance the quality of life in our region, they help fund holders achieve their charitable goals and preserve their philanthropic legacy.
In recent years, we have taken a stronger leadership role in the community to connect people and resources that address our greatest opportunities.
We are transforming our region through the generosity of our donors. This is our mission. Community leaders will forever distribute the interest that the Community Foundation's funds accrue with an aim to support charitable purposes that will improve the quality of life for everyone in the area.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
