What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We believe a wish experience can be a game-changer for a child with a critical illness. This one belief guides us and inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the local children we serve. Our local chapter currently grants more than 400 wishes for Missouri & Kansas children each year; however, it is estimated that there are over 600 children who are newly diagnosed with a critical illness and are eligible for a wish each year. We are relying on our community and supporters to help us reach our vision of granting the wish of every eligible child. In order to achieve our vision, we are actively recruiting more volunteers to fulfill our mission, working with medical professionals and school counselors to increase referrals, seeking in-kind donations to help contain wish costs, and launching multiple fundraising efforts to mobilize regional support and to increase transformation gifts.

Wish Granting

We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in an effort to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Make-A-Wish grants wishes with the help of our many volunteers; specifically our wish granters. A wish granter is a Make-A-Wish volunteer who works with wish children to discover, plan and fulfill their one true wish. Wish granters work in teams of two; use resources wisely by seeking donated goods and services; and make each wish a unique, magical and memorable experience for the child. They understand these wishes-come-true are powerful, life-changing events that enhance the human experience, strengthen families, and bring communities together. For more information on how to become a wish granter with Make-A-Wish Missouri please visit our website at mokan.wish.org.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Make-A-Wish Missouri & Kansas has a fiscal year 2019 goal of granting 433 wishes. Research tells us that there are over 600 children who are newly diagnosed with a critical illness each year.  We are dedicated to making every eligible child's wish come true.  To accomplish this, we are seeking additional resources for medical outreach education for wish child referrals, funds to meet raising wish costs and volunteer training programs. Last year, we granted 120 of these wishes right  here in the Kansas City area.

·         Increase Referrals-We will source additional referrals from medical professionals and school counselors from rural areas, smaller local hospitals, and community-based clinics. ·         Strategic Fundraising-We will launch a fundraising effort to mobilize statewide support, with an emphasis on Kansas and the greater Kansas City area and seek transformational gifts. ·         In-Kind Donations-We will sharpen our focus on in-kind giving to help contain wish costs. ·         Internal Infrastructure-We will redeploy resources and make the necessary investments to position our staff to grant a wish for every eligible child.

Strong Governing Board engagement, signature fundraising events, external fundraising partners, strong corporate partner relationships, as well as the philanthropy of individual donors.

The number of local wishes granted continues to increase each year.  There is still a gap to fulfill our vision of reaching every eligible child.
