Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Early Childhood Education

Missouri ranks near the bottom in the Country for investing in early childhood education. Research is clear: providing quality opportunities to children ages 0-5 has a lifetime of benefits. SLPS knows this and has expanded its early childhood education program, thanks to help from the SLPS Foundation. Last year, the District offered free, quality, full-day early childhood education to over 1,900 three and four-year-olds. Students in our Pre-K programs consistently perform better throughout their academic career compared to peers who did not did not attend SLPS Pre-K.

Earning a postsecondary degree is a game changer. Since 2015, the Foundation has worked with the District to ensure that all 12 of its high schools have a college counselor or advisor on staff, offer more college prep classes, and provide free ACT prep. The Foundation also supports the Early College Academy through which high schoolers graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree. The results are encouraging: over 88% of graduates enrolling in two-year & four-year colleges, 2020 graduates attracted over $50 million in scholarship aid and will be attending over 170 institutions.

Population(s) Served

Great principals are key to driving success in the St. Louis Public Schools. Numerous studies have found that principal quality accounts for 10-25% of a school’s academic achievement. The Foundation supports the District in attracting and retaining great school leaders. The Foundation also seeds creativity amongst promising SLPS school leaders with innovation grants. The Foundation has also seeded the launch of Re-Design Fellowship program which will engage 5-7 high performing SLPS principals. These school leaders will spend the next year learning and traveling with their peers to excellent schools, defining their school in an innovative way, with the goal of driving better student success through proven innovations.

Population(s) Served

SLPS students struggle with a range of health challenges from asthma to toxic stress. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced a new set of challenges for students. Last year, we provided nearly $17,000 to support families with basic needs. The SLPS Foundation regularly convenes 10 partner mental health services providers and funded additional school-based therapists who collectively provided 1,775 therapy sessions to students across the District last year. We also support schools becoming trauma informed.
