Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Sustainable Harvest International - Sustainable Farming Extension Program
Since 1997, has provided long-term technical assistance and training to rural farming families in Central America. This proven model equips and empowers low-income farmers with the resources to implement alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture, sustain the land for future generations of farmers, halt tropical deforestation, and build strong, self-supporting communities through agribusiness.
Participants’ key environmental challenges are deforestation, water pollution, and climate change.
Balancing culture and tradition with new technology, SHI has raised the standard of living for thousands of Central Americans. Communities have become self-sufficient and thrive as a whole; all the while repairing and maintaining the environment—the "life support system” of our planet for the benefit of us all.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
OUR FIVE AREAS OF IMPACT:
1. Preserve tropical forests and the life-sustaining functions they provide.
2. Increase access to healthy food for all program participants.
3. Increase community capacity to practice sustainable farming that is compatible with local culture and the environment.
4. Increase household and community income.
5. Transfer of knowledge and individual empowerment.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We understand the importance of educating individuals and providing them with the training and tools necessary to become community leaders in sustainability. To accomplish our mission, Sustainable Harvest International's local field trainers work with families, individuals, and communities for an average of five years using a five-phase approach (we really like the number five).
Each family that chooses to participate in our program receives frequent, technical assistance from their field trainer. Visits and trainings are tailored to each participant's goals, preferences, and abilities. In order to graduate to the next phase, participants must demonstrate that they are ready.
When participants graduate from our program, they continue to demonstrate their increased capacity by teaching others the skills they learned through working with us.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Accountability for the Future: SHI will do everything possible to ensure a positive future for our planet as part of its commitment to future generations as well as current SHI stakeholders.
Creating the Future: SHI will favor long-term impact over short-term expediency as we work towards a positive vision for the future.
Asset-Based Approaches: At SHI, we utilize all assets including the wisdom of subsidiaries, affiliates and participants, as well as financial, human and natural resources. We always seek the best tools for responding to needs.
Interconnected and Interdependent: SHI always seeks to have the greatest impact for as many people as possible through cooperation and collaboration, treating all parties with respect and compassion.
Systemic Solutions: SHI seeks to create global transformation by identifying systemic roots of problems and working to change those systems.
Always Practical: SHI uses practical tools to engage people in changing their future. To do this we encourage a culture of ongoing learning and evolution of ideas based on data.
