HAND2PAW FOUNDATION

Unleashing Opportunities for Youth and Shelter Animals

aka Hand2Paw   |   Philadelphia, PA   |  www.hand2paw.org

Mission

Hand2Paw provides a safe and supportive work environment for youth, ages 16-24, who are experiencing housing insecurity or foster care involvement, as a means of enhancing resilience, compassion, and connection with people, animals and the community of Philadelphia. Hand2Paw accomplishes this mission by providing paid internships working with homeless animals as well as a curriculum of programming that enhances coping skills, emotional regulation, and healing using animal assisted interventions. Our program focuses on social and work skills, such as: conflict resolution, financial literacy, self-esteem and self-efficacy, and job preparedness. Hand2Paw is the only nonprofit in Philadelphia whose mission is to teach youth practical work skills in a trauma-informed, animal welfare setting.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Paid Internships

Young people work 20-25 hours a week learning valuable work and life skills while caring for animals waiting for homes. The youth learn how to care responsibly for many types of animals and what resources are available to community members who find themselves struggling to provide that care. They facilitate adoptions of homeless animals to new loving homes and engage in community outreach to keep pets safe with their families. Hand2Paw also operates a Summer WorkReady program to instill basic work readiness skills in younger youth and the Pawspurr program, a weekly humane education program for youth not ready for the commitment of an internship.
