What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Foster to Adopt Program

If a dog still needs to undergo heartworm treatment or any other long-term treatment and a person wants to adopt this dog, they will enter the foster-to-adopt program. The dog will reside with the potential adopter, but will remain under BRAT's control until the treatment is completed. BRAT will pay for the treatment. Once the treatment is completed and has been signed-off by the attending vet, then the person can formally adopt the animal.

Population(s) Served

An experienced foster family is paired with a brand new foster home in order to help them become successful from the very beginning. A mentor must have fostered at least 3 dogs from beginning to adoption and have participated in all phases of the fostering and adopting process.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

By our third year, we have saved 125 dogs. Our goals are to continue saving bassets. We hope to have saved at least 200 bassets by the end of 2014. Currently we have 30 foster homes. We hope to have closer to 40 by the end of 2014. We also work with two boarding facilities in case we need to bring in a dog and we don't have an open foster home.

We are on Facebook and other social media. We also write and distribute a monthly newsletter. Due to our exposure, we gain new foster and adoptive homes. Also, we gain new volunteers.

BRAT is structured by committees. We have certain tasks within each committee and a coordinator for each committee. Due to this structure, we are able to add new volunteers and give them a task they can accomplish for BRAT. Each committee coordinator reports to the board on a monthly basis. Each committee sets goals for the new year and reports to the board as to how they are proceeding with these goals.

We have held three annual BRAT Pawloozas which is our biggest fundraiser for the year. We also have instituted a Mentor program for brand new foster families so they can be successful from the very beginning. We conduct quarterly Foster Clinics for our foster families and volunteers. We have a guest speaker come in and educate our fosters and volunteers. This may include dog trainers, dog behaviorists, vets, etc. Also, the Founder of BRAT has become a certified dog trainer from Animal Behavior College. She works directly with our foster and adopter families in order to make the transition successful.
