Community Information
Public Media of New England, Inc. is Greater Haverhill’s only public radio station and nonprofit local news service. Also known as 97.9 WHAV, its goals are to expand awareness of Early Education and Out-of-School Time Programs and Career Pathways for Youth and Young Adults; effectively reach marginalized communities overlooked by traditional marketing and communications standards; promote donor- and volunteer-engagement vital to leveraging growth and sustaining educational and career programs; and create effective delivery channels—on-air, online and via cable television and other vehicles it controls—so that those most in need have access to publicly available resources.
Spotlight on Underserved Audiences
Public Media of New England’s goals coincide with the collapse of traditional media and overcome the risk of programs being available only to those who “know someone” or left to fend for themselves. Its grassroots, multimedia approach has successfully irrigated the local news desert and ensure critical news and information isn’t limited to the domain of small groups of the well-connected. Its news policy, available on its website, spells out is policies regarding fairness, integrity, transparency and credibility and sets a high standard for diverse community interaction and coverage. A review of news coverage, available at WHAV.net, demonstrates its dedication to “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice” with local news and Community Spotlight coverage.
