Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Orchestral Training & Concert Production
Northeast Massachusetts Youth Orchestras (NMYO) provides high-quality ensemble training led by top area music professionals. NMYO's eight ensembles include Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Intermezzo Orchestra, Overture and Prelude String Orchestras, and three levels of Flute Ensembles. Nine free-to-the-public concerts are presented each season. Each ensemble rehearses weekly and present two major concerts during the season. The Flute Choirs also present a third concert and our advanced musicians present two chamber music concerts each spring. All groups perform shorter outreach concerts throughout the year. All NMYO Symphony Orchestra musicians participate in an eight-week chamber music program as part of the program which culminates in the two chamber music concerts. NMYO auditions are held throughout the year and all students who audition are placed in an ensemble according to their ability. No student is turned away for inability to pay and tuition assistance is offered to those in need.
Youth Serving Through Music
The Youth Serving Through Music program is NMYO's community service component and involves all NMYO members. An eight-week chamber music program supplements the orchestral experience for our advanced musicians. These chamber ensembles, along with our Flute Choir musicians, play small outreach concerts at area nursing homes and senior centers. Our younger musicians perform the annual "Thanksgiving Basket Project" community service concert each fall which raises funds for the Food Pantry and the Thanksgiving baskets it provides families in need. Our intermediate players perform a concert for the Ipswich Council On Aging in the spring. In addition, several NMYO high-school musicians act as mentors to young players in Up With Music's "Community Strings" program in Lawrence, MA. Our mentors provide weekly support to the 100+ Lawrence students by coaching and helping with their instrument practice.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
