Bethesda Workshops

a place for healing

Nashville, TN   |  www.bethesdaworkshops.org

Mission

Bethesda Workshops encourages sexual wholeness by ministering to those damaged by sexual sin and addiction. We provide a place of healing where people can begin a process of restoration with God, themselves, with others and within their marriages. We use the best clinical strategies, coupled with Christian principles, to achieve spiritual, emotional, and relational healing for sexual addiction. Bethesda Workshops also provides training for clinical professionals and church leaders who work with sex addicts and their loved ones. As a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization, Bethesda Workshops provides clinical excellence at an affordable price.

Notes from the nonprofit

This year, 2020, has indeed been unusual in many, many ways and has affected EVERYBODY in one way or another. There have been positive affects and there have been negative affects. A positive affect for Bethesda Workshops has been a new online offering for the population we serve. On-line and In-person will never be the same, however, they can both be a very good means of achieving a desired outcome. While we are now blessed to have an on-line service, the year 2020 was still disrupted and our normal operating income was negatively affected. That is why donations to Bethesda Workshops is more important to our program this year than perhaps they have ever been in our history. Yes, we will at some point be able to offer in-person intensive workshops again and in the meantime, our income dollars are down and while our donation dollars have stayed consistent this year that just may not be enough. We ask that you help us as we strive to help others. Thank you for your support!

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

To summarize the need that Bethesda Workshops is working to address is simple. We want every person, couple and teen family that needs the services of Bethesda Workshops to be able to attend without the constraints of their financial situation. Currently, Bethesda Workshops has limited funds available for scholarships to those who qualify. Applicants must submit detailed financial information, and scholarships are awarded based on annual income, the number of people in the family, and special circumstances. This financial assistance is good for the 20% of participants who receive scholarships, however, how wonderful it would be if we could help 100% of the participants by not raising workshop fees for 2020 and perhaps also for years beyond.

Healing for Men Workshop

The Healing for Men workshop is a short-term, intensive setting that maximizes your investment of time and money. The four-day workshop provides the equivalent of 8-12 months of weekly counseling and is a huge jumpstart or boost for recovery. The workshop is clinical, meaning all the leaders are at least master’s level, licensed counselors who are specifically trained in treating sexual addiction. We use a comprehensive approach that addresses not only the acting out behavior, but also its roots. Each person develops a specific recovery plan to guide his process after the workshop.Participation is limited to 30 attendees or less. For group processing, participants are divided into small groups of no more than six men and work with the same leader throughout the workshop. Individual counseling is not part of the workshop. The workshop fee includes all lodging and meals. Insurance does not cover the cost, but a no-interest payment plan is available.

The four-day workshop provides the equivalent of 8-12 months of weekly counseling and is a huge jumpstart or boost for recovery. The workshop is clinical, meaning all the leaders are at least master’s level, licensed counselors who are specifically trained in treating sex addicts and partners of addicts. A Healing for Couples workshop provides the same boost for your coupleship that the individual workshops did for personal healing. Healing for Couples is the same intensive setting that maximizes your investment of time and money.Healing for Couples is geared for those who are relatively new in their process of recovery. Because the workshop’s focus is on building non-sexual intimacy, husbands and wives do not room together at the workshop. Husbands stay with other husbands and wives stay with other wives. The workshop is clinical, meaning all the leaders are at least master’s level, licensed counselors who are specifically trained in treating sexual addiction. This workshop uses a comprehensive approach that gets beneath the specific issues in the relationship to look at the roots of the problems.Couples are divided into small groups and work with the same Bethesda Workshops leaders throughout the workshop. The workshop fee includes all lodging and meals. Insurance does not cover the cost, but a no-interest payment plan is available.

Research and experience shows that families with a struggling teen benefit from family therapy as well as help for the teen individually and for the parents. For an adolescent to heal and that healing to last, parents must be part of the process. Struggling teens are much more likely to change in the context of family-based healing. That environment takes some of the pressure off, as they realize the treatment focus isn’t solely on them as the “problem.” It’s vital that the whole family be involved in a coordinated process of understanding, growth, and change. The program is a group process where multiple families attend at the same time (normally four to six families). The participants move between brief educational segments, activities, and group settings. Some of the groups are separate gatherings of the
teens and the parents, where each population has a safe space to share their challenges as a family. Other groups are family therapy (with the teen and parents together) in a multifamily group setting, meaning one or two other families will be part of the group. The intensive is active, experiential, and engaging for both the teen and the parents. Participation is limited to six families. Individual counseling is not part of the program, but each family gets significant dedicated attention within the group setting. A family greatly benefits from observing other families’ work, as well as from doing their own.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

In order to accomplish not raising participant workshop fees, Bethesda Workshops has to have a plan to increase outside contributions. Every dollar contributed is a dollar that is available to help keep the participant fees lower. The participant fee covers all workshop costs, lodging for the duration of the workshop and meals. By keeping the fees low, more people will have the opportunity to attend the intensive workshop and begin on their journey of healing.

In order for Bethesda Workshops to increase outside contributions, we have to find a way to reach out to more potential donors, whether they be individuals, foundations, or corporations. To this end, in the latter part of 2019 Bethesda Workshops added a part-time employee to work in the area of grant funding. She also was tasked with updating non-profit website profiles (such as the one on Guide Star) in order to keep up-to-date information available to the public. By using the resources of websites such as Grant Station, numerous grant opportunities and possibilities are available. Also through social media outlets such as Constant Contact and Face Book, we can keep our current donor base informed of our successes and our current needs.

Bethesda Workshops is it's people. With a staff of 3 full-time and 5 part-time people, much is accomplished. With everyone doing their part, costs are kept at a minimum, receivables are kept at a minimum, workshops are efficiently conducted and every dollar is wisely used. When an organization can successfully account for it's expenditures, that makes the funds coming in very strategic. If Bethesda Workshops can budget more participants because our participant fees can remain among the lowest in the industry, it will be a win-win for all. The participants can be out-of-pocket less money and Bethesda Workshops can start more people on their journey to healing.

So far in our goal to keep participant fees to not be increased in 2020, we have begin our 2020 budget process using 2019 pricing. We also have begun to enter the grant application process for appropriate grants from foundations, the federal government, local churches, etc. We are updating the Bethesda Workshops profile in the various online websites that support non-profits such as Guide Star. We are always looking for ways to increase our audience and to strengthen our donor base. Bethesda Workshops has a track history of being fiscally wise and strong and we will continue to use every dollar intentionally and to strengthen our program.
