What we aim to solve New!

There are 7000 languages spoken in the world today. Nearly 600 of them are 'dominant' languages spoken by millions of people. The other 90% of those languages are spoken within relatively small communities. People experience constant pressure to abandon their language in order to gain a better education or better jobs. Yet a community's language is part of their identity and heritage. It is the language of the home and community life. It is the language children take with them to school. SIL LEAD supports non-dominant language communities so that they can maintain their unique identity--including their language--while still pursuing their development goals.

SIL LEAD's vision is that all language communities around the world have a voice in their own development, in their own words.

SIL LEAD helps local, community-based organizations achieve their own vision by managing internationally-funded projects focused on their needs.

SIL LEAD has a global network of expert consultants and local partners through which we offer extensive capabilities in language, communication and education.

SIL LEAD customizes progress indicators for each project, but they all relate to local capacity in language development, such as the number of teachers trained in the basics of Multi-Lingual Education (MLE), student reading competency, the number of new instructional books developed or social behavior changes through effective communication in the mother tongue.

SIL LEAD has facilitated material development and teacher training in three languages, grades 1-8 in Ethiopia, in 12 languages, grades 1-4 in Uganda, and recently also started involvement in the early grade reading program in Nepal, covering three languages and grades 1-3.
