Overcoming Sex Trafficking

aka Refuge City   |   Richardson, TX   |  www.refuge-city.org

Mission

Refuge City is a faith-based ministry that provides safe places for child sex trafficking victims and their families to achieve restoration, education and advocacy in a family-focused environment. We accomplish our mission through trauma-informed individual, caregiver, and family counseling; therapeutic art; caregiver support; family style meals; and our GED school. Our long-term vision is to provide a complete continuum of care to child sex trafficking survivors that includes a safe house and transitional apartments.

Our programs

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Restorative Care for Children and Youth + Caregivers

RESTORATIVE CARE: Sex traffickers often prey upon children and youth who have experienced abuse, neglect, violence or manipulation. Our Restorative Care Programs (RCP) are for 11-24 year olds who have been sexually exploited and/or trafficked + their caregivers/family. RCP includes individual, caregiver, and family counseling; therapeutic art; caregiver support; and family style meals in a safe and peaceful environment. All of our services are free. Our counselors are LPCs. Our team is trauma-informed and TBRI-certified.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Caregivers
At-risk youth
Economically disadvantaged people

GED SCHOOL: Many children are lured into sex trafficking during middle school, around 13-15 years old. After they are rescued, they are typically too old to be comfortable in middle school. The complex trauma they have endured makes a traditional school environment overwhelming. Refuge City's GED School bridges that divide for 16-24 year olds. School includes instruction, books, and testing; family style meals; a graduation ceremony (with cap and gown!) and a party for the graduate's family and supporters. Students are required to participate in one of our Restorative Care Programs. All services are free. Donors may sponsor a student. Our teachers are 30+-year retired Texas teachers.
