What we aim to solve

We work to provide clean water to rural villages in Guatemala and across Africa with plans to expand to other countries as well. Once villages have clean water, they then have the time and health to pursue education and/or other income generating activities. We look for communities that have demonstrated an ability to support teachers and to successfully run a school on their own, but who may lack the means to ever build a structure, which means they are always battling the elements and a conducive learning environment. We will then construct primary schools to make the education process infinitely easier and teach vocational skills.

Clean Water - Walk 4 Water

We are providing clean water for millions using sustainable, village driven principles. When a community is evaluated and identified as a possible recipient, the groundwork is established through education before borehole drilling begins. The community is taught and demonstrates an understanding of the value of clean water and the health and economic benefits it brings. Villagers are also taught about sanitation through proper hand washing. Community health trainers are identified and continue to teach within the community and within the schools. Either a community maintenance committee is set up with established rules for villagers to contribute funds and an elected villager takes responsibility for maintenance. Complete maintenance training is provided and follow-up on each borehole is completed at 6, 12, and 24 months to assure obligations are met. Creating access to clean water saves lives, facilitates education, provides hope, and enables prosperity to take hold.

When the most basic need of clean water is met, we can then concentrate on education which has been proven to be the single greatest predictor of progress, opportunity, and prosperity. Educating one child ultimately changes the lives of hundreds more. We look for communities that have demonstrated a commitment toward education and have made the appropriate sacrifices to ensure their children receive this great gift. When communities have proven their ability to successfully and sustainably provide instruction but lack an appropriate structure, they become candidates for new school construction which is often a requirement of the government to allow children to continue their education through upper primary school and beyond. Thanks to generous donors, Family Humanitarian was able to construct new schools in Dungu, Ghana and Buyaga, Uganda. These schools will provide an education for over 2,200 students annually.

We would like to provide lifetime access to clean water and access to education to as many people as possible. Our short term goal is to provide clean, safe water to 1million people in the next 3 years.

We make use of our own drilling crews and/or long-term relationships with contractors that allow us to drill boreholes for about 75% less cost than most other NGO's. Further, an essential part of our program is in making the communities responsible for the project and its continued success. Before a borehole is ever drilled, land has to be donated - the community then undergoes extensive education on health, sanitation, and hygiene, and forms a maintenance committee. This maintenance committee is tasked with developing a plan for having borehole maintenance funds available before drilling commences and at all times thereafter. They are also trained extensively on repairs and maintenance of the borehole and understand that they are responsible for all of the maintenance and repairs that are necessary for their borehole. Inspections are conducted at 6 weeks, 6 months, and annually to check up on the proper functioning of the maintenance committee and borehole and to make sure the borehole is still functioning properly. These also give us opportunities to retrain and reinforce the committee responsibilities. Often, if a larger community has demonstrated excellence with their duties and responsibilities, they can then receive a second borehole to relieve the strain on the first and wait-times for collection. We employ GIS tracking systems to achieve the most accountability possible.

We have developed successful programs, contracts and relationships, and developed digital tools for tracking quality and success that will help us to achieve our goals.

In the 3 years we have been drilling (including about a 1.5-year shut down for COVID), we have drilled 79 boreholes and distributed 300 water filters providing over 150,000 people with clean water for life. We have also constructed 6 schools and have plans to expand to additional countries.
