Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
American Journalism Institute
We train young journalists through a comprehensive two-year fellowship program, fully paid, of news reporting coupled with education in political and economic sciences. This educational curriculum includes teachings from Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, and other foundational theorists in political philosophy, economics, and public policy disciplines.
In addition to completing an educational curriculum, our Fellows publish hundreds, often thousands, of stories for free public consumption. At the end of their fellowships, we launch Fellows into careers at other media outlets across the political spectrum, from conservative to liberal. America needs better and more
politically-balanced news reporters. We built a pipeline to fill this need.
Commentary: Big Tent Ideas
Big Tent Ideas launched in 2022 with a vision of empowering center-right thinkers by producing their work and expanding their reach and impact to newer, bigger audiences.
At this moment in our culture and politics, political ideologies are in flux. Orthodox, “inside the box” ideas are challenged by policy analysts across the entire political spectrum. Our goal is to use this opportunity to enrich the discourse with fresh perspectives from a center-right position on a variety of public policy issues.
Investigative Group
Our Investigative Group performs long-term investigative reporting from which other, for-profit news outlets are financially disincentivized. Our goal is to hold public officials accoutnable and to inform with facts, not opinion.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our mission is two-fold: First, we strive to be the most innovative, successful, results-driven training ground for up-and-coming journalists in America. We train, mentor and launch the next generation of reporters, all the while providing full time salary and benefits. Second, we investigate and tell stories that are overlooked or intentionally ignored due to media bias. Then we push those stories through our 300+ licensed media network partners to reach millions of Americans.
The results of our efforts can be seen not only in the size of our audience but in the impact our reporting has made. Our content is relevant to the general public as well as lawmakers; prominent media figures and influential grassroots activists. Our work is disseminated through a growing global distribution network, driving conversations into homes and across the desks of policymakers. The goal is for our stories to provoke change, incite debate, and challenge partisans of all political stripes.
When we launched in 2011, local and regional newspapers were receding and national media companies were downsizing, unable to produce news that mattered to readers. In a short period of time, and in spite of this challenging operational environment, we raised a group of journalists committed to the guiding principles of individual liberty, limited government, and free markets, and pledged to produce trustworthy news reporting. We rival and often exceed traditional media outlets in terms of quality and impact.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The Daily Caller News Foundation advances its mission through five key programs:
1.Developing and launching the careers of a new generation of reporters through our Journalism Fellowship Training Program ( AKA American Journalism Institute in February 2020);
2. Our Investigative Group performs long-term investigative reporting from which other, for-profit news outlets are financially disincentivized;
3. Policy Reporting that is not automatically pro-government and anti-market; Our goal is to report both sides of the issue.
4. Online Video Journalism Program makes use of a medium that is fast replacing television journalism as the go-to source for news; and
5. American Renewal elevates opinion journalism and expands the reach and impact of center-right thinkers during this crucial moment in our culture and politics.
We the stories overlooked or intentionally ignored by most media. These stories counter misleading reports, portray the citizens and businesses imperiled by an overzealous and activist government, and humanize the victims of overregulation, cronyism, and character assassination. Our work prompts policy changes, holds public officials accountable and educates the public on relevant issues with facts, not opinions.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a news-wire service, like AP or Reuters, offering our reporting free of charge to licensed media partners. We leverage a network of 300+ domestic and international news companies licensed to carry our content.
Our reporting ranks near the top of Facebook’s most prolific sources of information. Several of our partners rank among Facebook’s Top 25 list of its most frequently shared publishers, alongside big media like The New York Times, The Washington Post and National Public Radio. We are leading the pack and dominating digital media in the 21st century.
Every year we produce hundreds of relevant videos. Just the top 50 of these videos alone generated more than 275 million minutes of viewing time on Facebook through our distribution network. In addition, members of our network experienced significant increases in the number of their video subscribers on YouTube. NumerousMultiple videos from our team have been retweeted by media pundits, governors, congressional leaders and even presidents.
We publish hundreds of news articles, investigative reports, and videos each month. Topics covered include public policy, education, immigration, healthcare, technology, business, labor, foreign affairs, energy, politics, economics and religion, among many others.
We do not just “preach to the choir.” Quantcast, a preeminent media digital research company, found that our largest partner’s audience is 33 percent liberal, 25 percent conservative and 42 percent independent.
You will find our work cited in hundreds of media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Business Insider, Yahoo, Fox, CNBC, Politico and The Hill. You will find our stories reprinted or cited in over three dozen countries around the world.
Of our 480,000 identifiable readers in the area surrounding the nation’s capital, 30 percent use government computers. This tells us that consequential stakeholders follow our work, including, for example, congressmen and their staff, federal agency staff, and the White House.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since our launch our success has been dramatic:
1. Fifty journalists have graduated from our two year Fellowsship program. You will find the alumni of our American Journalism Institute at The New York Times, CNN, CBS, Reuters, Fox News and Fox Business, Business Insider, The Washington Examiner, The Daily Caller, The Hill, Newsweek, OANN, Sinclair Broadcasting and a dozen other media outlets. They are White House correspondents, talk show hosts, radio broadcasters, editors, reporters, communication directors, press secretaries and fact checkers.
2. Our Fellows program, initally a one year program expanded into a two year program providing ful time salries , benefits and structured training for each Fellow.
3. The class size of our Fellows grew dramatcially. Starting with just a few reporters each year, we now run concurrent classes with up to twenty fellows at a time.
4. The training itself has expanded to include classes incorporating video journalism, fact checking and social media impact. Fellows now receive over 140 hours in classroom training and over 800 hours in direct mentoring from senior staff over the two year period.
