Obstetric Fistula service delivery in Africa

The Freedom from Fistula Foundation (FFFF) is a 501c3 registered charity dedicated to helping women and girls who are injured and left incontinent following prolonged, obstructed childbirth. We provide free surgeries for patients already suffering with fistula, as well as maternity care to prevent fistulas from happening at all. We run service delivery programs in three countries, Madagascar,Sierra Leone and Malawi.

In all three locations, the Foundation helps train national surgeons in fistula repair, as well as training community midwives in Malawi and hospital midwives in Sierra Leone. We finance access to healthcare during pregnancy and labor and repair obstetric fistulas, and we conduct widespread outreach and advocacy campaigns

In Sierra Leone we have our own hospital called The Aberdeen Women’s Centre in Freetown. The center has a dedicated fistula operating theatre with a capacity to perform 600 fistula surgeries a year; and a maternity ward which safely delivers up to 140 babies a month.

In addition, we have a children´s outpatient clinic which provides free healthcare, immunizations and a feeding program for children. We treat 1000 children a month.

The Aberdeen Women’s Centre also operates an approved training program for local midwives, thus increasing the amount of trained midwives in the country and we operate a national Freephone fistula hotline for women to call for advice and assessment.
In Malawi we operate The Fistula Care Centre, a unit, formerly part of Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe.

Unique aspects of the Malawi center include a 35 bed fistula unit; a dedicated operating theatre, providing capacity for up to 400 fistula surgeries to be done every year; and a day room for patients which is used for our education and empowerment classes, which include literacy, numeracy and sewing. We also operate a training program for fistula professionals to help ensure the long-term sustainability of fistula care in Malawi.

We have a dedicated fistula unit in the grounds of CHUT Hospital Toamasina with a capacity to treat 250 patients a year.

We seek to provide the highest standard of care for fistula patients in Madagascar, in addition to raising awareness of the issue in the country. We will be providing surgical services to heal fistulas, as well as high quality pre and post operative care, raising awareness through media and community sensitization and training local healthcare workers, including Clinical Officers and nurses, so as to help build capacity in the overall healthcare infrastructure.

Our holistic approach to our patients encompasses a patient rehabilitation, education and empowerment program that includes access to family planning, business training, literacy and numeracy classes, as well as lessons in arts and crafts, all of which is designed to help them break their cycle of poverty and reintegrate into society with future opportunities.
