What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We are working to educate the public about artist / designer Harry Bertoia and modern art overall. Currently there is no single reliable source of information about Harry Bertoia. The seekers of such information include museums and galleries, dealers and auction houses, students and post graduates, journalists and researchers, private collectors and the general public. Also, because Bertoia crossed the boundaries of design, furniture and art, the vocabulary around his work is undefined and terminology is inconsistent. In addition, Bertoia helped to shape modern sculpture, sounding sculpture and post war art and, while already in university art history text books, his role needs to clarified and defined more specifically. Plus, Bertoia rarely titled or signed his work (and unauthorized copies are rampant) which creates issues in authenticity.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Catalogue Raisonne'

Gather and compile data of Harry Bertoia's entire body of work, estimated at 20,000 works of art. This entails extensive research, purchase of proper software, hiring art historians to assist, and entering the data. It is a multi-year project.

Population(s) Served
Adults

In the last decade of his life, Harry Bertoia amassed a collection of nearly 100 sounding sculptures known as Sonambient into his remodeled barn turned concert hall. Now that his children are aging, the barn is deteriorating, and the future is at stake, a new museum home must be found for the Sonambient Collection.

An assistant is needed by the Director to help with organizing exhibition shipments, logistics of selling limited edition Bertoia items and daily operational duties. This person would also help to organize our archives (currently in cardboard boxes).

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

1. We are compiling a Catalogue Raisonné to document the artist's entire oeuvre of at least 15,000 objects (which we expect to take at least 10 years)
2. We offer educational lectures on the artist nationwide and internationally and hope to continue as needed
3. We offer services to verify authorship of Bertoia works and will maintain this until the Catalogue Raisonné is close to completion
4. We are working to streamline and clarify the categories, descriptions, and terminology of Bertoia's work including Sonambient, sounding sculpture, bushes, dandelions, etcetera.
5. We are seeking a museum home for the masterworks of Bertoia, the Sonambient Barn Collection of sounding sculptures, as an entity (not to be separated) where concerts will be held.
6. We want to become (and already have to some degree) the source of all things Bertoia, information, images, archival data, and more
7. We gained publication for two monographs on Bertoia, one biographical and one scholarly, and aim to distribute these widely

1. We have hired a Director of the Harry Bertoia Catalogue Raisonné Project and expect to hire assistants as funding allows.
2. We have several speakers who lecture broadly on Harry Bertoia and intend to train younger professionals and the old ones leave.
3. Our archival files give us the resources to verify and our personnel takes the time to research authorship.
4. The Catalogue Raisonné Director, along with several board members, have taken on the task of categories and terminology.
5. We are working with Sotheby's on a private treaty sale of the Sonambient Barn collection.
6. Our Internet presence, social media sites, and extensive website pages offer a lot of information, and our phones are always open.
7. The Life and Work of Harry Bertoia, and Bertoia the Metalworker are both readily available and book launch events are underway.

1. We have qualified personnel in place and are looking for funding to acquire more. The Catalogue Raisonné Director, Dr. Marin R. Sullivan, has the scholarly credentials and passionate enthusiasm to steer this project. We have already received one grant and have several more applications in the works.
2. Celia Bertoia, William Shea, and Beverly Twitchell are all sought after speakers. Other family members and outside scholars have expressed interest in joining this circle.
3. Celia Bertoia performs this service and devotes substantial time to it. She consults with other Bertoia experts as needed.
4. The foundation has more Bertoia documents than any other group and thus the resources to properly determine terminology are available. The first meeting on this topic made substantial progress. We are also consulting with auction houses and those who have come up with user-created terms.
5. Sotheby's team is contacting appropriate museums, is planning a concert event, and has created a beautiful catalogue with specifics.
6. Judging by social media followers, website action, and number of emails and calls, we are heavily relied upon for information.
7. The books are already out and available; the deed is done.

1. We hired a qualified director and expect to acquire interns this fall. As mentioned, there are currently fourteen CR entries and more coming every week. Several auction houses have offered to insert our CR notice in their Bertoia auctions.
2. We’ve averaged six lectures per year since 2013 and see this number only increasing. Prestigious organizations such as the Rhode Island School of Design, Philadelphia Museum, and Palm Springs Museum of Art are included in our clientele.
3. We have consistent clients and return business and new clients every month. Many auction houses have us on speed dial.
4. We’ve already seen the usage of our newly corrected terminology in use. As new questions arise, we address them as needed.
5. We have made many museums aware of the offering with some interest expressed. Sotheby’s has been a good teammate and we have a concert event in the planning stages.
6. With 29% online growth in 2018 and 1300 daily visits to social sites and website, our reach is spreading widely.
7. The sales of these books have been steady and positive. If they keep selling, we’re doing something right.
