Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Develop young leaders through social outreach. Inform targeted youth of the value of higher education, assistance in identifying scholarships, loans, grants and work-study and other means of financial assistance to fund higher education, and to assist these individuals in developing career interests and the requisite knowledge, aptitude, skills and training necessary for success in those chosen fields of endeavor.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We reach out to local high schools within the Hampton Roads and Peninsula area and target youth (young men) that have aspirations for success through education. We bring those young men in under our charter and teach them over the course of several weeks how to invest in himself in the following areas: Paying for College, Dressing for Success, Choosing the Right College, Financial Literacy and Investing, Creating an Academic and Professional Resume, How to Raise Funds, Leadership Fundamentals, African-American Health Issues, Drug Abuse Awareness, How to Interact with Law Enforcement, Personal Financial Management, Public Speaking and much more.
We maintain a close relationship with these young men and parents through their education endeavors as positive professional mentors. I biggest hope is that one day they teach one and help another young man understand what honorable achievement is.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We collaborate with guidance counselor's, principals, super intendent's and administrative staff to ensure that we are managing expectations and setting an example that is attainable and manageable. We have severable meetings with parents and administrative staff through out the year to make sure we are speaking from the same sheet of music and hold one another accountable.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We presented the Hampton Roads community with 12 Beau's for FY 2016-17 and awarded $34,000.00 in scholarships.
We presented the Hampton Roads community with 16 Beau's for FY 2017-18 and awarded $57,000.00 in scholarships.
We presented the Hampton Roads community with 16 Beau's for FY 2018-19 and awarded $68,947.21 in scholarship.
We presented the Hampton Roads community with 14 Beau's with 2 Beau's residing out of area. Our hope is to award at a minimum of $50k.
Each year our goal is achieved and we increase our scholarship giving to put needed money in the hands of young men to offset university cost.

- We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
- We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
- We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
- We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
- We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
- We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We use a vetting process to identify vendors and partners that share our commitment to race equity.
- We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
- We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
