What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Environmental Health Intervention
TIFO is working in the Batken Province of the Kyrgyz Republic to assess potential health risks resulting from soviet-era mining and smelting industries. We are supporting the local health department and Doctors Without Borders in developing a intervention program that addresses health issues related to environmental heavy metal contamination.
Lead Poisoning Response
Since 2010, TIFO has partnered with Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, MSF), other international and national NGOs, Federal, State and Local governments, and traditional/religious leadership to address the worst outbreak of childhood lead poisoning in modern history.
Environmental Conflict and Climate Change
The intersection of conflict, environmental degradation, climate change, and hazardous industries such as mining have serious implications for global peace, public health, and economic development. TIFO is working with experts in the fields of conflict, environmental health, artisanal mining, and humanitarian aid to investigate the links between these complex issues and develop tools to help vulnerable communities adapt to dynamic global challenges.
Aral Sea Crisis - Risk Assessment and Mitigation
The Aral Sea was once the fourth largest inland bodies of water, but today it is 10% of its original size. This has resulted in economic hardships for communities that once relied on the fishing industry, in addition to salinization of soils & drinking water and heavy agricultural chemical applications contaminated soils, river beds, and food products. The crisis impacts over 3.5 million Karakalpak people, especially women and children. The scale of the issue is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest ecological disasters.
TIFO is partnering with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the Ministry of Health, and other stakeholders to assess environmental health risks in Karakalpakstan. The environmental data is some of the first collected in more than two decades. Results from the assessments will inform an intervention strategy that reduces health burdens on the most vulnerable populations.
