Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Every Mother Counts is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother, everywhere. Currently, a woman dies every 2 minutes from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. However, we know that 98% of those deaths are preventable. EMC aims to demonstrate that their are proven solutions that can end the tragedy of maternal death and save lives.

EMC also seeks to engage new audiences about the causes of maternal death and the solutions. We engage our community to take actions and raise funds to support maternal health programs around the world.

By providing grants to carefully selected programs, Every Mother Counts is able to demonstrate that it is possible to end preventable maternal deaths and disabilities. We provide grants to organizations that demonstrate a commitment to improving maternal health and that address at least one of the three main barriers to accessing quality care: transportation (linking women with skilled care), training and education (for health workers, patients and communities) and supplies (medicines, equipment and instruments).

EMC also reach new audiences through documentary films and videos that demonstrate the difficulties women face in the United States and around the world to access quality maternal health care and the ways these difficulties can be overcome.

In addition, EMC encourages its supporters to take actions to support maternal health through activities such as running with Team EMC, contributing to a supply drive or attending an event.

Each year, Every Mother Counts has seen a steady increase in donations, which has enabled us to increase our grant portfolio. In 2015, we more than doubled the amount of money raised over that raised in 2014 and increased our grants by 36% enabling us to invest in 12 programs in 8 countries.

We have also steadily increased our outreach. Our reach on social media has grown 244% since 2013. We have also been able to inform new audiences about maternal health issues through other channels and unique partnerships. For example, we partnered with CNN Digital Studios to our documentary film series, Giving Birth inAmerica, which was featured on CNN.com and reached over 1 million people.

As our community grows, so does our opportunities for engagement. For example, in 2015, over 39,000 runners raised funds and awareness for maternal health initiatives with Team EMC. In 2016, we plan on launching a community page on www.everymothercounts.org with peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities that will allow community supporters to create and share unique ways to become involved.

EMC is proud of its accomplishments and the fact that we have directly and significantly impacted over 400,000. As we move forward, we plan to further support our on the ground partners with additional professional resources to ensure independent sustainability. We will also create more original content and partner with other storytellers to curate more films, photo essays and animation to depict the challenges to, and the solutions for, improved maternal health. We will also on adding unique, creative ways to engage our supporters through a new community page on our website, www.everymothercounts.org.
