Gender Justice through Panzi Foundation

In 2022, six new legal clinics opened under The Panzi Foundation. ECI will provide one year of funding for these clinics, allowing:
● 600 cases of gender based violence (GBV)survivors to be documented and assisted
● 60 cases introduced and followed up in court
● 300 GBV files reconciled
● 288 awareness sessions organized

Population(s) Served
Victims of crime and abuse

Covid-19 brought countless challenges, but it also highlighted innovation. Using telehealth platforms as an inspiration, ECI is funding the Women's Legal Associate (DFJ) as they develop a teleadvisory service for legal aid. This will extend their reach to women in more rural areas, increasing access to justice for more survivors of violence and offering educational opportunities to more communities than ever before.

Additionally, Covid-19 refocused on attention on offices and workplace needs. DFJ realized that by purchasing land to build headquarters that they could limit their expenses. Additionally, by including offices for outside renters they will create a new line of income. This will contribute to their overall sustainability as the added revenue can be used to support their mission.

Three years ago, ECI established entrepreneurial training center The Hub with local partner Un Jour Nouveau. This year, we are partnering again to support the development of two business lines that will provide steady income for the center as well as local jobs and opportunities for real-world business experience.

Through the new knitting studio and block manufacturing company:
● 1100 students will buy locally made knitwear as part of their uniforms–this keeps money inside Congo and limits shipping needs, creating greener clothing
● 100 households, offices, and other businesses will build with locally made bricks
● 18 full time jobs will employ people with steady income well above the national average*

*Growth has already exceeded expectations and a second round of hiring is underway as of April 2022 (projects launched February 2022)

In South Kivu, a province of DRC, radio is the most accessed form of media and the primary method of receiving news and important community updates. Mama Radio is a trusted news source with a focus on gender equality–from their content to their staff.

With an already strong following, Mama Radio is working to extend their network to include more of South Kivu. Funding from ECI will:
● Widen coverage from 4 territories to 8 in addition to the city of Bukavu
● Shift access from 60% to 90% in the South Kivu Province, reaching over 648,000 more listeners
● Increase governmental and NGO media contracts by 67%
● Develop a business plan to increase revenue based on new tower installation
