BTRE Programs and Activities

Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement, aka BTRE, is an ALL VOLUNTEER organization that transitions thoroughbreds off the racetrack and all other breeds of horses into approved, loving homes from all over the United States. Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement’s has many volunteers that have been, in the past, been involved in horse rescue and have years of experience rehabilitating, retraining and marketing thoroughbreds and other horses into new homes and careers. This group has been involved with thoroughbred and horse rescue with other 501c3 groups and each other. Racing trainers approach us when they don’t have the time or they are unable to find homes for their horses, when they can no longer compete in racing. We have also helped horses that have been neglected or abused. Many of these horses come to us severely underweight and needing medical care. Veterinarians work with us to evaluate medical conditions when they first arrive at farms that assist us. Recently, we rescued six (6) thoroughbreds that ended up in the hands of a kill buyer. While building the horses up to good condition, experienced horse people work with them to evaluate their abilities to be riding horses. Many can be used for trail, dressage, jumping or even for pasture companions. In the mean time, we market to fine them suitable homes. Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement also assists owners and trainers in finding homes themselves, by listing horses on Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement’s website at www.beyondtherosesequine.org(http://www.beyondtherosesequine.org) . Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement volunteers talk with trainers and owners and take pictures and descriptions of horses they wish to sell. Often, Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement is asked to take the horse into the Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement program. These horses are taken to one of our foster homes, where the horses are photographed with pictures and descriptions immediately posted to Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement’s website. Funds for veterinary care and feed and general care are provided for by Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement. Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue and Retirement uses the internet, using Facebook and other horse rescue forums and blogs, to fundraise to help these horses. Funds are raised in accordance with the number of horses we take in. The internet resources are also used for marketing to find them homes.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue & Retirement strives to place off track thoroughbreds into new careers and homes when they can no longer compete in their racing careers. After coming into our program they are rehabilitated and placed into training with one of our trainers where they will learn a discipline for their new careers.

When every Thoroughbred arrives at BTRE, their training begins the moment they arrive into our program. Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue (BTRE) understands that transitioning a thoroughbred from the racetrack to a regular life can be a challenging experience. Most racehorses race from two to ten years and are retired for many reasons. Some have injuries that affect their performance and many have just lost their competitive edge. They have been on a set schedule for many years and need to adjust to a new environment. Those rescued from pens headed to slaughter and bad situations can be even more challenging. With these horses, their past is unknown. These horses are placed into quarantine for 30 days and are monitored closely for temperament, intelligence and ability to adjust to a herd environment. Basic training just to set a good foundation and prepare them for placement takes three to six months, depending on the horse. Once training has begun, BTRE begins showcasing the horse on social media and on our website showing the progression of the horse and that he/she is available for adoption. Anyone interested in adopting one of our horses must fill out an on-line application supplying information where the horse will be kept and references. Once approved, adopters must sign a Conditional Adoption Agreement and Conditional Bill of Sale.

Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue & Retirement works with many approved farms throughout the country that are owned with experienced trainers. Our trainers start our horses our from the ground up, teaching them slowly what is expected of them first on the ground and then under saddle.

Since 2012, Beyond The Roses Equine Rescue & Retirement has place over 300 thoroughbreds and other brreds of horses into new homes and new careers.
