Fiscal Sponsorship of Open Source Projects

NumFOCUS supports and promotes world-class, innovative, open source scientific software by serving as a sponsor organization for nearly 40 open source scientific computing projects. Through our fiscal sponsorship program, we provide our projects with administrative and operational support; legal and professional services; grants management; promotional services like fundraising and marketing; strategic guidance and support for project governance, including DEI; and funding for project development needs.

NumFOCUS cultivates a diverse and welcoming community of users and developers around our open source scientific computing projects. Each year, in partnership with local volunteers, NumFOCUS hosts more than a dozen community events around the world through our PyData program as well as project-specific conferences including JupyterCon, StanCon, JuliaCon, and the rOpenSci unConference. These events provide forums for users to interact, network, and collaborate; educate users on the best use of our software tools; and keep users informed about project updates and events as well as opportunities to collaborate and to contribute to our open source tools. NumFOCUS also maintains strict community guidelines and a Code of Conduct to provide community members recourse if they feel they have been the subject of unfair or discriminatory treatment.

Population(s) Served
Adults

NumFOCUS works to make scientific computing more open and accessible. Through our Diversity and Inclusion in Scientific Computing (DISC) program, we work with our open source software projects to diversify their contributor bases. We also ensure a diverse and welcoming environment at all of our community events by welcoming and meaningfully engaging individuals from underrepresented backgrounds. We actively solicit and help to facilitate attendance and participation from individuals of a variety of gender and racial identities as well as those who have been traditionally socioeconomically disadvantaged.
