What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Ben J. Lipps Research Fellowship Program

The goal of the Ben J. Lipps Research Fellowship Program is to fund fellows to conduct original, meritorious research projects. This program will foster, under the direction of a sponsor, the training of fellows who are highly motivated to make contributions to the understanding of kidney biology and disease. Ten new research applicants and ten continuing projects are funded annually, providing $50,000 a year per fellow for two years

Population(s) Served
Adults

Advancing the independent careers of young investigators in biomedical research, grants of up to $100,000 a year for two years are awarded to applicants within seven years of their initial faculty appointment. Up to nine new and nine continuing projects are funded annually.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Funded annually, the program provides $50,000 a year for two years to a nephrology educator to conduct a project to advance all facets of nephrology education and teaching. One new applicant and one continuing project are supported each year.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Aiming to increase diversity among future leaders, the award provides four years of research and career development support to a nephrologist from a historically disadvantaged background.

ASN has partnered with the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program (AMFDP) of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to address the shortage of minority scholars with academic and research appointments in the field of nephology through this award.

Population(s) Served
Ethnic and racial groups

Funding five new applicants and five continuing projects annually, the program supports PhD students conducting kidney-related research with guidance from a mentor by providing $10,000 a year per recipient for two years.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

To Prevent and Cure Kidney Diseases Through Research and Innovation

Established in 2012, KidneyCure, the ASN Foundation, funds the Ben J. Lipps Research Fellowship Program, the Transition to Independence Grants Program, the William and Sandra Bennett Clinical Scholars Program, the American Society of Nephrology-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program, and the ASN Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Award Program.

ASN KidneyCure funds research by focusing on funding research by new investigators and enables fellows to participate in kidney research projects; supports young investigators who are changing kidney care and helping to improve treatments and find cures; and funds clinical and basic research, and provides grant support to members at various points in their careers.

With support from ASN members, industry partners, and nephrology leaders, KidneyCure (the ASN Foundation) provides approximately $3,000,000 annually to young researchers, fellows, and nephrology educators who are changing the future of kidney care. Since ASN began funding grants in 1996, the society and the foundation have awarded more than $46 million to support research including:

- 17 pre-doctoral research fellowship grants
- 204 Transition to Independence grants
- 3 Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program grants
- 8 William and Sandra Bennet Clinical Scholar grants
- 99 Ben J. Lipps Research Fellowship grants
