What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Studio Samuel Foundation (Studio Samuel) is an Internationally Licensed Ethiopia-based organization dedicated to creating pathways for girls and women living in poverty to become self-reliant through education and employable skills. Studio Samuel originated and is located in Addis Ababa, where 28% of the residents live in poverty. Of the 10 sub-cities Addis Ababa comprises, our sub-city of Gulele is the oldest and the poorest, with high population density, insufficient housing, poor sanitary conditions, and a high rate of maternal mortality. In our community, five out of six girls drop out of school before sixth grade in order to help at home with childcare and household chores. With no education and families in need of an income, these girls are at high-risk for child labor, child marriage, and trafficking. More than 63 percent of unemployed Ethiopians are female. And many who are employed work in unskilled professions, limiting any option of breaking her poverty cycle.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Training for Tomorrow

Training for Tomorrow's two-year curriculum runs parallel to traditional schooling and has been selected based on the current groups' needs. Modules are pulled from UN-based agencies, proven effective in previous testing. Focal areas range from self-esteem building workshops to computer literacy to occupational training, with a spotlight on counseling (group and individual) to address any past trauma. Our goal is for girls to realize their potential, trust in their self-worth and create options that avoid falling prey to the many at-risk job 'opportunities' girls fall victim to in a marginalized environment. We work closely with the local government, agencies, and community. They observe our programs and select the beneficiaries who will most benefit. Training for Tomorrow has received positive feedback and praise from these agencies, leading to more groups taking notice and increased enrollment.
