What we aim to solve
Adults with intellectual disabilities have limited post graduate options. For individuals who are very independent there are vocational tracts and employment options. For individuals who are striving to be more independent yet still require continual supervision and directions or have added physical disabilities employment options are extremely limited. These individuals need to have program options where they can learn independence & life skills, socialize with their peers, and engage in daily activities. Many of these individuals are primarily cared for by their parent or another family member. Many social and medical advancements have been made resulting in an increased life expectancy, meaning these individuals are now outliving their parents, the primary caregivers. It is important that this population has trusting, comfortable, quality programs to participate in and living communities that can support and accommodate their individual needs.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Transitions Life Center (TLC) is planning to build an all inclusive, living, vibrant residential community for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Here they will have access to residential housing, employment options, community opportunities, and be socially engaged. The Community Center will serve as a community hub for social services, available to these individuals and their families along with health care and therapy options.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have obtained a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $600,000.00 and a donation of 9 acres from the City of Ocala to begin building a Community Center. This is Phase 1 of a 4 phase Capital Campaign Project. Currently we have raised $1,050,000.00 toward our first phase goal of $1,300,000 dollars to complete the site work for the community and a 5,000 SF Community Center with outdoor sports area and swimming pool. Phase 2 will include a gymnasium, pavilion, and outdoor improvements, Phase 3 will include respite housing, Phase 4 will include permanent residential housing.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a committed Board of Directors, individual & business supporters, and public support from our community government. We have an organized capital campaign and have secured 2 CDBG grants for building and property.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
To date, we have begun the building process for Phase 1, the Community Center and accompanying site work (underground, drainage, driveways, parking, activity fields). We have raised just over $1,000,000 of our $1,300,000 goal. Currently we have split Phase 1 into two parts with the expectation of completing the Community Center in the fall of 2019. Part 2 of Phase 1 will include a therapy pool expected to be complete by fall of 2020. We are a young organization, having organized in 2012 and Incorporated in 2013. Daily programs for our members began in 2016 and we have increased community awareness through social media campaigns, local media, and county/city government support.
