Osa Birds: Research and Conservation
Protecting the birds of the Osa through research and education
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Applied Research and Monitoring Program
Our work focuses on uncovering the natural and human related factors that limit bird populations and their habitats (e.g., loss of habitat or habitat degradation and fragmentation). Attention is given to priority resident and neotropical migratory bird species. We also monitor bird populations across the Osa landscape to detect changes in population trends. We do this through direct scientific research and community citizen science.
Avian Education Program
Our education program works with rural communities of the Osa Peninsula, both adults and kids, to raise awareness of the conservation of birds and their habitats. We do this through classroom curriculum that includes avian ecology, biology, native plants and bird habitats, and conservation; outdoor experiential classes. We coordinate local festivals such as the International Migratory Bird Day Festival IMBD and Backyard Bird Counts with local and international partners. We also partner with US organizations for educational exchange to stress the global linkages necessary for the preservation of our shared migratory birds.
Reforestation and Native Plants Program
As part of the mission to protect bird habitats we are working alongside communities to propagate native and threatened species, especially those plants and trees that are bird friendly, to restore degraded private and public lands and riparian watersheds.

- We have long-term strategic plans and measurable goals for creating a culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
- We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
- We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
- We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
