What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety
The Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety empowers victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse to overcome trauma and rebuild their lives, free from abuse.
We provide free and confidential services for women, children, and men who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, or neglect. From Emergency Shelter to Outreach and Advocacy, our services focus on helping individuals who have experienced violence heal. We are here to help survivors live free from abuse and offer guidance every step of the way.
The Children's Home Shelter for Family Safety (formerly Children's Inn) opened in 1977 as one of the first ten domestic violence shelters in the United States. In 1998, Children’s Inn merged with Children’s Home Society of South Dakota. It continues to operate as a program of Children’s Home Society and is the principal emergency shelter for abused women and children in southeastern South Dakota.
Bright Start
Bright Start empowers first-time moms to maintain healthy pregnancies and raise healthy, happy babies.
Bright Start is a nurse home visitation program for at-risk families and first-time moms during pregnancy and after delivery. Nursing services include prenatal, maternal, and infant/child health assessments and education; infant/child developmental assessments; parenting education; and health, safety, and nutrition education. Services may continue until the child's second birthday.
Bright Start also helps link families with community resources such as prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric medical care; family planning services; and mental health services. Participation in Bright Start is voluntary and free. It is designed to fit varied schedules and allows for personal preferences and needs.
Community Based Services - Foster Care, Adoption, and Family Engagement Services
Children's Home Society's Foster Care and Adoption services include Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC), Wendy's Wonderful Kids Adoption Program, Adoption Services, and Family Engagement Services (FES).
TFC serves children of all ages who have moderate emotional and behavioral needs, usually due to abuse or neglect. TFC offers a healing family experience to prepare children for reunification or adoption.
Wendy's Wonderful Kids Adoption Program (WWK) works to find adoptive families for children of all ages who are considered "hard to place." WWK believes that no child is unadoptable.
Adoption Services include therapy, family support, training, and referrals to available community resources.
Family Engagement Services is a proactive, pilot program offering intensive case management and evidence-based interventions and support to children, youth, and families at imminent risk of system involvement
Residential Treatment and Day School
We empower children to overcome the trauma that has affected their lives and guide families toward strength and safety.
Black Hills Children's Home and Sioux Falls Children's Home are psychiatric residential treatment facilities and special education schools for children. We partner with parents and caregivers to serve children with emotional, behavioral or mental health needs who may have experienced domestic violence, neglect, and emotional, physical, or sexual abuse.
Children in residential treatment are provided year-round specialized education. A Day School program is provided for children who are able to live with parents or guardians, but whose emotional or behavioral needs prevent them from succeeding in public school.
Black Hills Children's Home and Sioux Falls Children's Home are accredited by the Joint Commision and licensed by the Department of Social Services.
Children's Home Child Advocacy Center
We empower children who have experienced trauma to find justice and healing, together with their families.
Children's Home Child Advocacy Center (CAC) serves children who are alleged victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, or who have witnessed violence. CAC provides forensic interviews and support to families, as well as the coordination of specialized medical examinations.
These services eliminate the need for repeated interviews and examinations by multiple investigating parties. Referrals come primarily through law enforcement offices and Child Protection Services.
Child and Family Advocates provide support by helping to answer questions, helping to understand legal rights, helping guide through the court process, and helping connect children and families to needed community resources.
Prevention, Training and Education
We empower individuals to end abuse and build safe, healthy, and strong communities.
The goal of CHS Prevention, Training and Education is to prevent child abuse and domestic violence in South Dakota. Statewide education, trainings and events focus on teaching the public and professionals how to recognize and respond to child abuse and domestic violence, how to properly handle child abuse disclosures, understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and implement trauma-informed care.
